Just a quick thought, I did notice a couple of them already had their homes paid off, and that is a big chunk to not have to worry about….wonder if they could make it if they had to pay rent or a mortgage??? That makes a huge difference and a perk I will not have when I retire.
Sunblossom – Paying off your mortgage should be your first priority before retirement.
As I posted before “Money”, my husband and I both retired, living in NJ (one of the most expensive states) having our house paid for are able to live comfortably. My motto has always been “It’s not how much you make but how you spend it”.
Well, I don’t have a mortgage, just a renter, so I will always have a housing payment…you are fortunate. And to some degree it does matter how much you make if it is only enough for bare essentials….and your divorce has left you with debt that will never be paid off in your lifetime…the fact is I will have to work until I am 70 to have enough to live on in retirement. Life circumstances are sometimes contradictory to retirement security…it does make a difference when you are married and have worked toward that goal.
So true. Life is not predictable.
