RIP Davy Jones Most Liked

When I heard the news yesterday about Davy Jones’ passing, it was like a little piece of my childhood dying… he was my first perfect crush… so cute with his boyish face, goofy persona and English accent. I had all The Monkees albums, begging my mom to drive me to the record store to get them on the first day of their release.

In 1967, when I was 12 and had just relocated with my family from Massachusetts to Long Island, I saw them in concert at the Forest Hills tennis stadium. Their opening act was Jimmy Hendrix! It was so surreal… Thousands of pre-teen girls were so confused by the guy playing such weird music on the guitar with his teeth… we were all shouting “We want Davy!” The police actually opened a barricade and allowed a few girls to rush the stage to make it look like Jimmy had fans! Many years later, I learned that The Monkees were experimenting with drugs with Jimmy backstage…

As many people (particularly those much younger than me) have pointed out, The Monkees didn’t write their own songs (at least until later in their careers) and they didn’t even play their own instruments when the show started. True, but the fact is that The Monkees shows were the first music videos… and they were highly enjoyable. I saw the trio (Davy, Mickey and Peter) in concert during their comeback tour in 1986 and they were still as fun and goofy as ever, twenty years later…

Davy and his Monkees pals represent a moment in history for me… when I was young and impressionable and life was full of possibilities. Their music made me smile… and still does. Thanks, Davy, for all you brought to my life. Safe travels in the next dimension…

When I heard the news of Davy Jones’ passing, I felt like I lost a close family friend. Also coming from Long Island, I remember playing their albums over and over again, in my room, when I came home from school. Of course, I had the worst crush on Davy Jones! My brother made fun of me but I did not care! Davy was my heartthrob! Sigh … The innocence of youth.

I agree it was like losing a family friend. I too had a crush on Davy Jones. My mom called me last night and jokingly told me she was sorry my “boyfriend” died. I told yes I was in mourning. It’s hard to think of our childhood crushes as getting older. We were all so young back then we didn’t think about getting old.  Rest in Peace Davy.

He was my first crush too. I was 10 and living in Scotland. I remember watching The Monkees at my grandmother’s flat in Glasgow.

It’s sad he went so young.

I shed a few tears. I touched the monitor screen when the pictures of him as my then-beloved Monkee were posted. Ah. Davy.

    Damn.

I took my 40 year old daughter to see him and Peter Noone in concert last summer …. she was sad when she heard he had died and was glad she got to see him perform.

He and Peter both were unassuming, self deprecating, funny and still great performers!  I was about 15 at the time the Monkees started up and definitely crushing!

Yes …. RIP, old friend …
