This is the best book on MENOPAUSE that I have ever read. Not from a medical point of view…but from the view of one who can make me laugh while I am dripping with sweat at 3 a.m. and contemplating spending the day with my aging mother. I want an on-line dialogue about the humorous side of menopause. If we can’t laugh…we are gonna go crazy. Funniest story you have about “the change”.

I just started reading this yesterday and am loving it, even though I went thru menopause (pretty much without any problem at all) in 1996.
Not too long ago I was comisserating with myself (AND my usually supportive, brilliant but-oh-so-stupid-sometimes scientist of a husband) about the state of my mid-section. This used to be a part of my body of which I was quite proud – flat tummy and all. Now it is what a friend and I refer to as “flesh pudding”. Of course, I was hoping that he would repsond with some sort of loving comment – “Honey, you are still the sexiest woman alive” or some such thing. But, alas, as often happens, he was hit by a sudden bolt of truth serum…. and said, “I know… I was surprised at how fast it came on………………………… I headed out the door in search of chocolate….
Molly, love the descrption of ‘flesh pudding’. After I went through menopause it seemed like someone had wrapped a layer of blanket bunting, like you put inside quilts, around my mid section and it has not left! Oh, the joys of maturity! Hope you found the chocolate.
Molly! I know change is hard…especially when it’s your body that’s playing mean tricks on you but please, please, please…love your beautiful mid-section. It holds the top and bottom sections together so nicely. And to the unbiased eye of someone who had never seen the earlier version, it still looks might damned fine!
You are so right about the humor/craziness! Remember the Seal song “Crazy”?
I’m loving Marrying George Clooney! It’s raw funny, silly funny, fabulous and frankly funny! Amy takes us to places we’ve all been but we weren’t laughing then! Shoe pairing hit my silly button-great example of how far the sleep-deprived mind can go to entertain us. And, the husband who believes he was wide awake, not snoring and is in far worse condition than you . . .
My neighbor across the steet and I used to be magnetically drawn into the middle of the street (a fairly quiet one) to share “incidents” of menopause craziness. She used her hairspray as deodorant, watched Soprano episodes almost non-stop for a week, I can remember tearfully insisting that I had to stay home and bleach my husband’s underwear and socks and clean the toilet rather than sit by his parent’s pool with him. Yikes! The washer runs by itself doesn’t it??? There’s many more and I’m laughing myself silly going through Amy’s with her!
This is one of the best books I have read in a long, long time. I feel like I am munching through a wonderful box of chocolates! I am trying to drag it out and savor every delicious chapter!! Very witty and full of relevant humor. I can’t wait until her next book comes out! I usually don’t recommend books but “Marrying George Clooney” is a winner.
Thanks Kristine,
You’re never wrong when it comes to a great read or a GOOD LAUGH!
Coincidentally, I heard some good buzz about this Clooney book last week from two other friends. Can’t wait to read it! My mom’s menopause lasted a good 10 years….. I’m only on my 6th year now….. thank goodness, NOT!
We received this book at a recent women’s retreat weekend and I can’t wait to read it! Thank you to Amy!!!
Recently finished reading Marrying George Clooney and LOVED it! It is laugh out loud funny, but with such a strong core of truth about the author’s middle of the night moments of clarity, challenges and life experiences. Going through menopause and having a mother suffering from dementia are two fairly daunting tasks. By sharing her journey with us and enbibing it with humor, author Amy Ferris is holding a light on the joys that life can contain even amidst the craziness.
Just what we need—a book that helps us bypass–the passage of those “times” when we would like to forget that we are getting “up there”, over that hill, or just plain invisible. I wish Amy could appear with George Clooney on Oprah or Ellen! That would be a coup. Love the book! Amy’s wit will get us through the days when we are at our wit’s end!
Thanks Peggy @ Screams of Consciousness…I love your blog. You are insightful, irreverant, truthful, funny and just plain brilliant. You and Ms. Ferris should be friends.
OKAY ONE AND ALL>>>SPREAD THE WORD! Think of all those lonely, sweating, forgetful, overcommited women we know who might laugh for the first times in years if they only knew about Marrying George Clooney.
I hate to be pushy…but those women are my passion. We need insider information to get MGC to the networks. Ask your friends. This book will change how we value ourselves and expect others to value us…It’s an investment in a better life all around.
