It’s no secret that I review women’s fiction for Library Journal. However, when I mentioned I was putting some of my reviews on VibrantNation.com, a site for women over fifty, I started getting a new assortment of books, not just the mysteries, fantasies, and women’s fiction that I usually receive. Love for Grown-ups: The Garter Brides’ Guide to Marrying for Life When You’ve Already Got a Life
Reading Love for Grown-Ups is like reading Dear Abby, a complete advice column with happy endings. Ann, Nina and Pat were business colleagues and friends, all over the age of thirty-five, who thought they’d never marry. Within a year and a half, they had all married. Instead of throwing her garter, Nina, who married first, passed it on to Ann, who passed it on to Pat. So, the tradition of Garter Brides, mature women who were marrying, was born. Now, three of those women provide advice to other “grown-up” women looking to date, and possibly marry.
The authors assure readers that it’s better to go into relationships and marriage with some experience. It’s easier to avoid pitfalls, and know how to be happy. And, they handle all kinds of issues that twenty-some-year-old brides don’t have to think about. Questions range from marrying a man with kids, marrying if you yourself have children, how to handle a marriage if your career is already successful, where to live, how to deal with families, how to do with the exes, dealing with alimony and wills. They all acknowledge that marrying later means both parties come to the marriage with baggage. But, they also suggest people come to marriage as grown-ups with a sense of humor, wisdom, and life experience that will make the relationship that much more realistic and interesting.
