Has anyone tried the new Kindle? I can’t imagine it replacing “real books” but maybe I’m just being an old reactionary! My good friend bought two, one for herself and one for her mother. She loves how light it is.

I haven’t tried it. I have trouble reading on the computer and am worried the same will happen with the Kindle. I am afraid of spending that much money and not being able to read it.
The Kindle technology is such that it closely replicates the written page as opposed to the computer screen. I’m told that it does not tire your eyes like a monitor will. My grandson has a Kindle and I am fascinated by it. I do love the tactile rituals that accompany my reading an actual book but think I could & would develop new and hopefully equally satisfying rituals with the Kindle. I have eliminated much from my easily cluttered life and strive to minimize more as time goes on and books take up a lot of space. I love the fact that you can download a book in seconds, you can make notes in the book (I’m a chronic note writer in my books), you can research terms, names etc from your Kindle, you can download magazines and newspapers and, should you lose or damage your Kindle, all of the books you have purchased are still available via Amazon. The Kindle will also read to you but it is in the automated voice we have on our telephones etc so it lacks inflection. The cost keeps me from getting a Kindle but it remains on my wish list.
I find it to be very much like a paperback book in both size and reading. I love it! It’s portable and holds lots of books so I don’t have my luggage book heavy but still have my books. It’s been worth it in cost of books, too, since they are less expensive, generally, on Kindle.
I am now a Kindle user and love it! I still love holding a book in my hands and rifling thru the pages. However, being able to enlarge the type is a huge benefit of the Kindle. At night, the larger type is fantastic for tired eyes. Obviously it is fantastic for travel–take all the books you want in your purse–and if you finish the one you were reading when you left home, download another in less than a minute–even while sailing the Indian Ocean. Love it. Nice addition to much loved “real books.”
Nope, At first I was fascinated with the Kindle… and I think its a good idea for people who travel a lot. But I don’t travel a lot and its still kind of pricey for me.
maybe someday I’ll get one….
I haven’t yet purchased one, but am interested. Iam not sure if I would miss actually turning the pages of a good book !! I think I might miss that !! Does anyone out there own a kindle but doesn’t miss that part ?
After working all day on the “puter,” the last thing I want to do is look at another screen. To me they are way overpriced and call them anything you want…they are still a computer. There is nothing better to me than browsing the library, or your friendly neighborhood book store looking at all the covers, seeing the possibilities, smelling the leather, etc. Nope, call me a dinasour, but give me a book. I’m resisting this new technology…
I have had my kindle for over a year and I love it. I find am reading a wider range of books than I ever have and I am a very voracious reader. I also really like that my husband and I can read the books we download at the same time each on our own kindle. No more buying two copies of the newest hardback because we both want to read it first. Yes the cost of a kindle is still high but the cost of the books is much cheaper than buying a new hardback, I have saved more than the cost of the kindle by getting new books for 9.99 or less. I even enjoy reading the newspaper (SF Chronicle) and am looking forward to my New Yorker subscription at less than the paper price and no clutter!
Our library bought a few Kindles, so I had the opportunity to look at the device before making a purchase decision. I found it difficult to engage in close reading on the Kindle. I didn’t find the note taking or bookmaking functions useful. I hated the linear nature of device. It lacks color and easy searchability. I found it works for light reads and would be useful when traveling. I have put it pretty low on my priority puchase list and am still waiting for a more robust device. Kindle 3 anyone?
The i-phone app is amazing – it takes you to the exact page on the kindle where you left off – so you can read anytime, anywhere – on your phone too.
I agree!! the i-phone app is incredible and I always have it with me. I sometimes wonder if I read from my phone more than the actual Kindle. So easy to grab while waiting in line or waiting for an appointment. The best!!
I read the reviews on the Kindle after it first came out and several reviewers said that they thought there were some bugs in it that might be resolved with the next version. I waited until the Kindle 2 was ready to come out. I had called Customer Service at Amazon in January, and they said they didn’t know anything about a release date for the new Kindle. I was pleaseed when I read the notice of its release. I pre-ordered it on 2/14 and was told it would be released on 2/24. I ordered it with the free delivery option and hoped it would arrive by my birthday on 3/8. I was totally surprised when it arrived on 2/25, the day after it was released. Being an avid Stephen King fan, the first thing I ordered was UR. I got a pretty creepy feeling when I started reading it and found out that it was a story about a man who orders a Kindle sent regular delivery and gets it the next day! I must say that I’m just thrilled with my Kindle. I have been an avid reader all my life and there just doesn’t seem to be enough time to read everything I want to. I especially like the ability to change text size (I have it set at the second largest level), the fact that you can order a free sample to try the book first and the text-to-speech feature that is available on most books. It just amazes me that I can make a selection and in less than a minute, it’s there for me to start reading. We are going to Alaska in 8 days and I have my Kindle loaded up with some books and oodles of samples to read. I’m really glad I invested in a Kindle. The cost was a little hard to justify, but it has gone down a bit now.
I love my Kindle! It hasn’t replaced books in my life but is much handier to cart around in my purse than a book. I can continue my reading anywhere easily and I really like the dictionary feature. I also like to read in bed and the Kindle is lighter than most of my books with more readable print than a paperback. It isn’t cheap, but it was worth it!
Oh Hooray!! My children gifted me with a Kindle for my 62nd birthday and I love it. I have been traveling the last several weeks and my Kindle has been so much handier than the bundles of books I usually lug through airports. When I received it, I immediately purchased a protective cover and a reading light. Now I can comfortably read in bed, I can read in the car when traveling at night, I can read outside at night – yes ladies, I can comfortably read anywhere and my arm and shoulder are no longer bearing the burden of a heavy book bag. I do have one concern about the Kindle – the ease with which I can purchase reading material. Within seconds I can have a new book, magazine or newspaper charged to my “on file” credit card and downloaded to my Kindle. For a woman who has grown less and less disciplined as she ages this can be a very dangerous service!
I love my Kindle! Have had it since June and find I am reading a much more varied number of books. I love how quickly you can “buy” a book, like tonight on a snowy night in chicago when i dont want to go out. The other feature i love is being able to download a sample at no cost. And my husband loves that i can keep all my books in one place and they will not continue to overrun our den, family room, office, etc. I bought my daughter in law one too and she loves it.
