Dr Laura Schlessinger Hot Conversation

Did anyone hear the call that has gotten Dr Laura in hot water? Just wondered if you all see it as a racist rant like the media did? I feel that she lost lots of respect, first of all she didn’t help the caller she just went off into a rant. The caller was a black woman married to a white man, she called to ask how to handle friends & family that always tend to say things that hurt her feelings pertaining to black people. Her husband never supported her and just ignored the comments, which I feel is an issue because he could squash all the comments by simply supporting his wife. Just wonder what you ladies think since this as been all over the media.

I heard it while driving to work.  What rant are you talking about?

Also, the media has never respected DL so how could she lose respect with them?  Most of her critics usually take her words out of context, aren’t regular listeners to her show, and don’t read her books?

Yes I heard the conversation, she didn’t help anyone.  I think the women has a big mouth, she’s rude and many times ignorant with people.  I’d never call her for help on any issue.

I heard it and thought she was very disrespectful to the caller and anyone who was listening.  She showed absolutely no sensitivity to the caller and was only out to make some kind of point about what blacks call each other.  She sounded very racist to me by using the n word over and over and over when this had nothing to do with the question the caller was asking for her advice about.  I felt sympathy for the caller.

I dont listen to talk radio very much, and I certainly never listened to her.  So it would be unfair of me to comment on that which I dont have any first hand knowledge.  Certainly have heard a lot of mixed things out there in the public domain where she is concerned……so I’ve heard what I perceive 2nd hand to be good and bad.

On one hand, i’ve heard she calls them like she seems them, has strong opinions she will voice unabashedly, and she has a strong moral fiber (her own of course) that she holds to consistently.  Assuming thats true, I cant fault her there and in fact admire and support her willingness not to bow down political correctness.  Good for her.

On the other hand…….I’ve also heard she is one of those who tries to espouse that homosexuality is a sin against god.  Do NOT get me started on that.  One day I am likely to go off on this issue………………and it will NOT be pretty.  God help anyone in front of me when that day happens.

Haven’t listened to her either, not since around 1994 – but I literally laughed out loud over your last paragraph, Dallas. I’ll be standing behind you when you go off on that particular issue. I’ll be the person swinging a baseball bat at anyone who tries to slow you down.

OK now to answer the question now that i read the transcript.

Dr laura busted jade left and right.  Seemed like DL wanted to bust her too.  Seems like she actually enjoyed busting her.  I’m not looking for Dr laura to be nice, but yeah i read a tone of “rip her a new one” in there.

And Jade acted one enchilada short of a combination plate.  her so called examples of racism by her husbands friends simply were not.  It sounded as if they were well meaning people asking her questions to understand.  Dr Laura as right about Jade being hypersensitive.

Jade also jumped around all over the place changing topics and attempting to evade Dr Laura’s questions of her.  A lot of what DL was asking her was valid and on target and jade didn’t like it.    Dr Laura didnt give jade the help Jade  wanted because candidly Jade wanted to be coodled and treated with political correctness.  Maybe she should call Oprah next time.

As far as Dr Lauras use of the “n” word.  I hate that word.  I hate it no matter who uses it.  And that includes black comedians who use it with each other, rappers etc.  If a word is not appropriate to say in mixed company then it isnt appropriate to say period.  The chanting of it seemed unnecessary and maybe even meant to shock.  Didnt think that was necessary.  She could have made the same point without the shock value.

Like I originally posted though…………….she doesnt feel it necessary to be politically correct on any level and any time it seems.  She may be braver than I am then~!!!!

Hi Dallas, I’m glad you read it but you could have listened  - the audio is there too and hearing the actual dialogue with intonations and such makes a huge difference.

Dr. Laura is not racist.  I’ve heard her advise more than a few callers to dump their family members if they’re racist or don’t accept an interracial marriage or interracial grandchildren.  What she is intolerant about is mixed religions, which she believes cannot work in the long run.

She has a Phd in physiology. Her doctoral thesis was about insulin. Not a therapist.

I must have missed the link for the audio but I’m still comfortable opining based on what i read. But to elaborate on that point: I didn’t read any comments that made me think she’s a racist at all. And as you already know from previous posts I think the racism word is used too often when none exists. In this circumstance, I dang sure didn’t see it.

I just hate hearing the “n” word said by anyone, anyplace, anytime. And I’m politically correct in that way. But I agree wholeheartedly with her that there shouldn’t be a standard that black comedians can say it and it’s ok, but white talk show hosts can’t point out the double standard.

But hey–There are other words I don’t like either. (see the post on what slang is used for breasts).

Scuba, you are right that the tone of her voice may have been such that negated my comments about “seemed to want to rip Jade a new one.”. Mea culpa , my bad on those comments. To anyone reading this–ignore that aspect of my original

Just a follow up:  Since the media went biserk over this incident, Dr. Laura has decided to quit her radio show when her contract ends.  She explained that she’s tired of political correctness and how things get twisted around so quickly in the media.  This should make all the DL haters very happy.

I, however, think this is a great loss to the many women listeners to her show who need a kick in the butt in order to make better decisions involving things such as spousal abuse, addictions, neglect of children, and picking good partners.  I’m a pro-choice feminist and so I don’t agree with DL on everything, but she generally gives good common sense advice on many issues and no, she is not a bigot – otherwise I wouldn’t listen to her.  Too bad so many condemn her just because they “heard” that she’s hateful.  Many times she can be harsh, but she has a big heart and this is known by her many loyal followers, including me.

P.S.  Dallas, I’ve never read nor heard her say anything anti-gay either.

I’ve not “heard” them either as I don’t listen to talk radio. I have seen quotes. They admittedly may have been out of context. …..BUT…..as a mother of a handsome genius 17 year old gay male…..my rancor and ire gets raised when I read anyone say that being gay is a biological error, or a dysfunction. I’ve seen her quoted with both( and more). The lioness in me kicks in at that point and I make no apologies for it.

DL, Don’t blame you for that.  I’d be the same way.

BTW, I was active in gay rights in the 70′s, way before it was popular for straights to do so – so no disagreement there.

I wasn’t kidding when I said the kid is a genius.  IQ of 140.  Almost perfect SAT.  (A couple of points off the writing portion, bad penmanship no doubt haha).  Since he is intellectually 1 in a 100, why  should it be a surprise his sexuality is 1 in 10?   So here’s my thing:  Why is his 1 in 100 intellect considered to be a “gift” but his 1 in 10 sexuality a “biological error”?

        ggrrrrrrr

SORRY Sorry sorry………..the lioness will go curl up and take a nap in the corner………..for now…

Scuba you are correct that Dr Laura has given tons of great advice to listeners for years. But she displayed behavior of a bigot with her rant; I’m not a hater of Dr Laura, I’ve listened for years and read all her books and supported her no non-sense advice. I can deal with harsh, no nonsense advice that she gives, most need that to digest what she’s telling them. But there is never a reason to spew out the N word repeatedly (11) times within five minutes. And several things that she said during the conversation classified what she did as a racist rant. I have lost respect for her and don’t care that she’s going off the air; I’d decided to stop listening already. But that is just my take on it; we are all entitled to our opinion.
