I’ve read far too many books to even remember 1% of them, but these are some that continue to resonate:
Beloved
The History of Love
The Poisonwood Bible
The Red Tent
What is the What
Everything is Illuminated
Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal
To the End of the land
Half the Sky
The Lost: A Search for Six of Six Million
Lucky You
Handling Sin
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down
I too have read so many good books; literally thousands. We do not own a television—threw it out 38 years ago! The books that make me smile are the books by Jan Karon including At Home In Mitford. I listen to them on tape at night to get to sleep. I’m a fan of Patricia Cornwell and love the forensics in her mysteries. Also Patricia Mueller and Bill Pronzini (husband and wife) write their own mysteries and joint ones. A recent light read with a deeper story line is Hannah’s List by Debbie MaComber; one of her best and she’s written many. (I find my summer reading list is much lighter than my winter one.) Memoirs such as Chosen By A Horse by Susan Richard and Truth and Beauty by Ann Patchett are worth re-reading. And then there is Nora Roberts….I could go on and on
My book kept me laughing – it’s entitled: Is It Still Murder, Even If She Was a Bitch?
It should be out soon!
Love that title!
Linda
1. “Not without my daughter” [ was also made into a movie ]
2. “Life” ditto
3. “Passge to India”
4. “The Notebook”
5. “Loves Music, Loves to Dance” Mary Higgins Clark
I can honestly say that those books were my favorites. I have read many, many others, that I enjoyed as well. These 5 I can honestly recommend.
I’m surprised that some of the books listed above would make someone laugh…
I would suggest “This is Where I Leave You” as a book that would make most people laugh out loud–if you can get past some of his naughtier passages.
Carl Hiaasen, Christopher Moore, Are both authors that make me laugh out loud. Then there are the series which you do not need to start at the first one since 17 is out now, Janet Evanovich’s Stepanie Plum! These are laugh, light reads!
Two books that make me laugh are A Confederacy of Dunces and Carrie Fisher’s Wishful Drinking.
Hi,
I’m getting ready for surgery on Friday. Age 53. Need books to listen to on my ipod. I like books that are light and on the funny side. Any recommendations?
Thanks!
You might enjoy books my Mary Kay Andrews. Light, humorous and with a touch of romance.

To SeekerPatty: Try “See Mom Run.” It’s available through audible.com. Compiled by Beth Feldman, it’s a collection of funny but true essays.
And like Robin Donovan (above) I have one coming out soon. It’s not a novel, but rather a novelty/gift book: “Don’t Pick Up the Ham With Your Fingers: A Little Book to do Momma’s Naggin’ for Her.”
I love anything by Elizabeth Berg, Lisa Scottoline, Kris Radish and, for humor–Janet Evanovich and Southern Exposure by Kimberley Dehn. I’ve been told my book, Finding Hope, is laugh-out-loud funny, too. Well, I laughed a lot as I wrote it.

Thanks, dannygirl… I had forgotten how much I loved “Confederacy of Dunces.” I read a lot but I will keep to a couple funny ones:
“A Walk In the Woods,” by Bill Bryson. Hysterical but also moving account of his hiking trip with a wacky friend on the Appalachian Trail. Great even if you never have hiked a step in your life.
“Bad Trips.” An anthology featuring many famous travel writers’ (Theroux, Pico Iyer) essays on journeys gone haywire. Proves the point that bad trips often are more interesting and entertaining than good ones.
Pretty much anything by David Sedaris. My favorite, however, probably is “Barrel Fever” which includes his masterpiece, “The Santaland Diaries.” This story careens between laugh-out-load funny to moments that will make you cry.
I ditto the Bill Bryson Book A Walk in the Woods. It is laugh out loud funny
Two of the funniest books I’ve read:
“Lake Wobegon Days” by Garrison Keeler
and
“Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man” by Fanny Flagg.
And yes, “Walk In The Woods” was very funny also.
I agree with Bill Bryson’s “A Walk in the Woods.”
I liked Maureen Dowd’s “Are Men Really Necessary?”. HILARIOUS!
Nice to see all the VN luv for “Walk in the Woods!”
If you liked that book, you also may enjoy Bryson’s “In A Sunburnt Country,” about his trip to Australia. A mix of history, whimsy and humor. I don’t like it quite as much as WITW, but do recommend it.
Have enjoyed this thread and your recommendations, fellow readers. I intend to pick up a few of these books.
My favorite author is Jen Lancaster. All of her books are laugh out loud funny.Myfavorite is” Bright Lights Big Ass”.
If you get a chance I’d love to know your thoughts on my new book. The first chapter is posted on the website http://www.rldonovan.com – if it looks promising I’d love to get some feedback. In fact, I’d love to get some quotes I could post on the site – with your permission.
It is a comedic murder mystery and the protagonist, Donna Leigh, is a menopausal woman – I’m hoping readers will laugh with her -
Nag, nag, nag.
It’s the nagging you heard as a child.
It’s the nagging your children heard from you.
It’s the nagging you wish your spouse or ex had heard from someone – anyone.
Here’s a link to my new book’s blog. The book is “Don’t Pick Up The Ham With Your Fingers: A Little Book to Do Momma’s Naggin’ For Her.” Over 40 illustrations from 18 artists. We think it’s a terrific gift book — hostess gift instead of the wine everyone gives, holiday gift, etc. Please check it out and let me know what you think, okay?

I can’t wait to check it out. It could be the perfect Christmas gift for my Mother – and I’ve been wracking my brains over what to get. The title speaks to me especially – because with one too many sips of martini – Mom always picks up the ham with her fingers!
Try Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind
, by Ann B. Ross, about an aging southern belle and recent widow who discovers a blonde floozie on her doorstop with a boy who is the spitting image of Miss Julia’s late husband. The many sequels are amusing, but the first one is laugh-out-loud hilarious.
