Any Vibrant Nation-ers want to make a group for the November NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month)?? Hot Conversation

A reader response from my post about “releasing the writer/artist within,” yakkity has suggested this opportunity to write, write, write for the month of November. Anyone interested in starting up a “home base” group of us fans of Vibrant Nation who love to write and want to challenge ourselves while encouraging each other? Hey, thanks again yakkity!

Hi, Fran…yes, yes, yes!  I just found Vibrant Nation!  I’m a published novelist, as a matter of fact…yay!  Three novels, two historical and one (the new one!) is a contemporary romance!  I’m very excited about finally realizing my dreams and goals!

    Thanks!

I’d be interest – I’ve been of citizen of NanoLand every November since 2004.  (perlesrose).  I have 4 novels written in varying stages of draft.  But none is ready for prime time yet.  I’ve been unemployed for a year, so I’ve been editing them between job search activities.

This year I’m thinking of using my Nano writing time to do a total rewrite of one of them.  I need the discipline and friendly competition that Nano provides to give me a little structure for my writing day – an imposed deadline.  With the book reviews I write, I always have an editor to answer to, so I get it done.  Latest review of ‘Noah’s Wife’ – a first novel by an over 50 Teresa Thorne, will post to Alabama Writer’s Forum November issue later this month.  I’ll post it to my blog when it comes out if anyone’s interested. http://perlesink.blogspot.com/

PS – there’s a Nano group on Facebook, too.

I have signed up for my first ever NaNo – have no clue what I am going to write about, lots of ideas but none that feel like they’ll ganer 1,667 words a day. How many of you actually have a story outline in your head already?

I’m no good at outlines.  I get an idea and I start making notes. I flip through magazines (I have stacks) and start clipping out characters and rooms and scenery and stick them to a posterboard above my desk and then write about each one and every place and then start weaving them into a story.  Kind of like an ‘Oprah Vision Board’ with a story line.  I think better with a pen in my hand, so I hand write in a spiral notebook, and later type it up on my laptop.

Tip:  Don’t edit yourself – just write.  There’s really no wrong way to do Nano.

That’s the hardest part for me and why I’m going to do NaNo. Hopefully it will push me past the need for perfect prose. (Not that what I write is perfect prose!)

If you have trouble just writing, pick up a copy of Julia Cameron’s ‘The Artist’s Way’. I’ve worked my way through this book 3 or 4 times since it came out and I still do my ‘morning pages’.  Good luck with Nano

Well, I’m new to all this, too, but have to say that I have absolutely NO idea what’s going to come outta me and onto paper (actually, computer monitor).  So, don’t let the fact that you don’t have a story outline deter you whatsoever.

I’ve been reading a LOT about writing this month, and without question, many famous authors and prolific writers often start a story without knowing what they will come up with.  And, be sure to read the author’s stories on NaNoWriMo.org, especially the Marine girl who didn’t know what she would write about and wrote while deployed in Afghanistan…

      You’ll do fine!  Just write!

I am interested in a November group. I am awfully busy right now–is this a request for someone to create a home base–or for us to do so together? I am awfully busy, however, if it is one person to create it, how does the home base work? Thanks Fran Rochmanna

If anyone ever wanted to see their book in finished in form, sign up for nanowrimo.org.  This year they have partnered with CreateSpace.com who will take your finished novel (must be winner, i.e., 50000 words or more) and print you a proof copy and ship it to you all for free.  When you get your copy, you can make it available to public on their site and/or for sale on Amazon.

Greetings – just terminated from my “job” in June, just found NaNoWriMo, just joined vibrant nation, just finished avoiding writing, which is my passion and my calling, just delighted to know you are calling forth a group to show up all month and represent on the page.  I am interested – thanks.

Thanks Rochmanna – don’t know why my name is chopped off on post – it’s actually perlesrose (as in perle alias rose – long story). It’s never too late to write and publish your first novel. I just reviewed a debut novel for a lady of a certain age for Alabama Writer’s Forum.  This lady has a husband, a full time job, a 45 minute each way commute, etc…I am pumped to get my own out there now.

Hi Fran–(or Franyo). A number of us have signed up for NaNoWriMo and are ready to begin. We have had a number of good ideas for our group. I know this is extra work–but could you remind us how to get right into Vibrant Nation group and set up the link?

Then we could set up the ideas and create sublinks? I still have to finish my profile and get as photo in (sometimes a challenge–any pointers on how to send one you have sent to other sites? Then we can have our list. Now, I know I have indicated I would like to be with the Vibrant Nation Group–but will have to re-read all the rules tonight with much happening now. I’m ready to get going. Anyway, I want to make sure to set it up on Vibrant Nation Group. It is all here but there is a lot of searching through various messages. Could I trouble you to recap for me (and maybe others) how to specify Vibrant Nation. Remember–my name for this is Rochma. Many thanks Fran.

HI!  Please forgive me for not being a very tech savvy person…. But, I was thinking that if all us VNers would post comments, encouragement, tips, and occasional prodding onto this VN post:

Experienced VN authors provide tips, inspiration, & encouragement to 1st time NaNoWriMo writers during November’s extreme writing challenge!

that it would be our ‘link’ for communicating here on Vibrant Nation.   I know that whenever there’s a new comment under one of the posts that I’ve checked “following this post” (at the top, by the actual first posting, I get an email in my inbox.  That makes it SO easy to stay in touch with others and see who’s adding more to our inspiration, questions, etc.  I LOVE Vibrant Nation for making communication so very easy!

Some already published authors have been including advice here, and I thought we could encourage each other on this same posting.  However, like I said, I’m not too techie, so maybe that’s too cumbersome for others?   Any suggestions out there??

Also, however, be sure to add all us VNers to your ‘buddy’ list on the NaNo site.  Check out those of us who have signed up to participate, and you’ll see the names we’re using.  I think we can communicate there, too, very easily, but more on a person-to-person basis, rather than have a ‘group’ that is shown.

Anyway you look at it, I gotta ask….Are you as nervous/excited/afraid/thrilled to be getting the first word down tonight at midnight?   Oh, boy!!  Here I go!  I’ve been looking for this challenge all my life…..

I am very excited–as so many of us are! Thank you for initiating this on behalf of all of us. The link sounds fine. The link is fine (forget the sublink idea. I like the idea of the experienced writers link. Your post below for Newbies is very helpful too. Sorry to ask you to recap! I followed All the posts today, jotted down notes, and names of all who posted. So, I have what I want! Fran–you have been so great in not only setting this up but responding to all of us! So—let’s get to our writing everyone! Good luck to all! Rochmanna “Rochma” on Nano

Hi! I just joined VN and I am really excited! I have decided to write a nonfiction book but need help on getting started. I think I am a bit frightened about not writing it perfectly with all the grammar and stuff, so I have started a few times and deleted it each time..

How do I begin, and when I do, how do I not get sidetracked about whether or not what I just wrote is good or not?

Hey all you Vibrant Writers Out there!  Anyone interested in taking on the challenge of NaNoWriMo 2010 together?

As for myself, I am counting on this past year to have taught me at least a couple of things so that I better meet this year’s challenge. I confess I was disappointed in myself last year (but then, I’m always hard on myself) and had to look at some hard self truths to realized changes to be made, some to be ignored.  All in all, I hope I’ve grown and learned some lessons about life, and love and writing in my life.  But I’m still a’learnin’.  Aren’t we all?

Now I ‘give myself a break’ and think, “Who knows/cares if I’ll meet the 50,000 words challenge?  It’ll still be fun and a great personal challenge for improving my writing.  I’m getting excited!”

How about YOU, Vibrant women writers out there?  Interested in joining up to form a VN NaNoWriMo writing support group?

Forgot to say that my NaNo name is “No_Word_is_Final.”  That reminds me not to edit in November–I can do it after NaNo and after graduation in December.  I won last year–but didn’t have a class in November, so had more time.  I might not win this year because of homework.  But I’m sure gonna play!

And I remember YOU!  In fact, I’m not sure I would have participated last year without your encouragement and that of others here at VN.  I’d never written anything more than a few pages long before that.  But last November I completed my first “lousy draft” of my first novel.  It changed my life in ways I’m still discovering.  I’ve been busy with school, but after graduation–and a surgery I’ve been putting off, I’m going to buckle down and get that novel ready to submit for publication.

Can’t tell you how thrilled I am that you’re participating again this year.  We can do this!
