I agree with a few of these – there is definitely action going on at places like grocery stores.  Even as a happily married lady, I get look, smiles, comments when I am picking up some fruit or milk.  However, I have to add to the list the following places where I could have my pick of men, if I were available:

    1.  Bookstores.  I don’t just get smiles at comments at the bookstores I go to.  I get flirted with, and out and out hit upon.  Men start conversations often.  Some are just interested in what I’m reading.  Some ar interested in a lot more.  The first time or two, I thought it odd, since I am not the kind of woman men “hit on”.  But it keeps on happening!

    2.  Motorcycle riding.  Whether it’s retaking the Motorcyle Rider Safety Course, or pulling off for a quick lunch, or taking my bike to the shop for service, there is always some guy approaching me, I have had to turn down more dinner offers than I can count.  Ladies, there are a LOT of hunky riders out there, looking for someone to ride alongside on her own bike, or ride behind them on theirs.  If this is something you could enjoy, go for it!  It might open up a whole new world for you!

    3.  Habitat for Humanity workdays, Environmental clean-up days, working at the food bank days.  You meet NICE guys serving these causes.  Some want to see a woman who knows how to swing a hammer.  Others just like you for showing up, and giving it your best effort.  Most of the work is not rocket science, and it’s for a great cause.

    4.  Doing work at the gym with weights.  You don’t have to be totally buff, either.  I’m so not.  I do wear some cool t-shirts to work out in, though.

    5.  Sporting events, but I recommend the off the beaten path ones.  In the USA, soccer is an undiscovered treasure – the major league games are even a bargain.  Great looking guys running around in shorts, the world’s hottest sport (and for very good reasons).  I grew up watching American football, and I will NEVER go back to it.  Soccer fans are WAY cooler.  Soccer is way cooler – more action (and continuous), and it is called “the beautiful sport” for very good reasons.

Take tennis or golf lessons, and join a tennis club or go to the driving range. Lots of men play tennis, and especially golf, and are willing to give you tips. The sports are relatively social.  Golf especially attracts a lot of men who are introverted, who you wouldn’t normally meet out in public.  Regardless, golf and tennis are fun, and you meet lots of nice people in general.

Thanks for the Great tip Alfreda and these are 2 sports that play right into a man’s DNA of helping  a woman in distress.  If you want to meet him, all you have to do is ask for help on your swing whether its a racquet or a golf club.

Take a class through your county, your school system, or an adult education class offered through your local community college or university, or look into the Osher Foundation (peer-taught).  These can be inexpensive or free, depending on your age and your state.

Great ideas all. But it is kind of awkward at times to try and check out the ring finger for that band without looking like you’re scoping for a wedding ring. Or maybe that’s just me.

      Hi Boz
Looking for the ring is one of those things you sort of have to do from across the room when you are scoping out the scene.  Like you mentioned, its a bit hard to do when you are right on top of them.  Let me know how the across the room ring scouting works for you :)

Great ideas, and very timely for me. It’s time to shake up the game. However, word of warning about the casinos: you don’t want to appear to be “working”.

Great point Faith. That’s why its good to sit in the casino bar with one friend and just engage a man with questions about gambling. As we all know, men love fixing things for us so you may as well play into that male characteristic by having him give you great gambling tips. Thanks Faith :)

    Lisa,

I think it’s crazy to leave out match.com and jdate.com.  Well, I guess it depends on where you live.  If you are a woman and you are open to moving to a new part of the country, I think that Seattle, Portland, Montana, Colorado, Idaho and other areas are great places to meet good men.  All you have to do is change your zipcode on your profile.  Then, guys from whatever area you want to try will find you.  Yes, it’s a bit more complicated, but if I lived in a youth-obsessed area like LA, I would try different zipcodes.   ps I met my husband online.  (Also, I would not go to a casino or horse race.  High rollers are looking for young babes.  Low rollers are often losers looking for a way to make up for all they’ve lost in their divorces… and they are high risk types.)

      Lisa,

It’s a numbers game.  Until you get a real feel for winners and losers, I think you should meet almost everyone with a decent job, who doesn’t sound like a mass murderer… well… within reason.  As long as you don’t give away your last name, phone number, place of employment, etc. the guy can’t find you.  99% of the guys are jerks, but I’m not sure the stats are much different in the real world.

Do I sound a bit jaded?  Hell yeah.  I’ve been around the block a few times.  However, I don’t think you should give up after meeting a few jerks… or a few hundred jerks.  The worst thing that happens is that you get a free cup of coffee, and maybe a cookie.

Online Dating is a numbers game, you are right.  I think there are a lot of very nice men especially over 50 looking for companionship.  The problem is they might not meet our expectations of the man we think we want.  That is why its good for women to go Out of The Box when they date.  It’s about dating a man who is slightly different from their usual male type pattern. It may feel uncomfortable at first yet it may turn out to be the best date ever!

Thank you for responding Lisa! That was so sweet! I will tell you that I’m an old pro at online dating. This isint about your article and I really dislike when people respond as if they’re at a counseling session, but I’ve been single for 28 years. The first 14 of those years was spent recovering from a hellish marriage and divorce while focusing all my energy and attention on raising an amazing son and returning to college to get my degree. When my son was reached fifteen I started brousing the sites. I kept a strong sense of who I am and what I want to guide me. It’s been frustrating, humerous, scarey and very rewarding!
