According to MassageMag, physicians began inducing orgasm in the 1820s. They used a stream of water, the hands, or even horseback riding to create the vibration necessary for female masturbation. The act was intended to cure what they termed “hysteria,” in women. (The term “Hysteria” at that time referred to conditions including vertigo, anxiety, headaches, irritability, insomnia and depression.)

George Taylor, M.D., is credited with being the first American to create a steam and foot/hand crank device, in 1880. Taylor’s “Manipulator” simply turned a wheel, which pushed a rod that created a movement on a handle or padded surface. The patient would either hold on to the handle and receive the vibration or oscillations, or sit or stand against the padded surface to receive the movement from the machine.

The first attempts at electrical massage were either battery-powered devices or those operated by foot or hand mechanisms moving a wheel or friction belt. By the early 1900s vibrators for women had found their way into the home. Sold as “body massagers,” they were available via mail order and advertised as a cure for various illnesses ranging from headaches and asthma to fading beauty and even tuberculosis. Their use as a tool for female masturbation was never stated, but somehow women got the message.

Thank goodness we don’t have to work with such primitive vibrators for women these days! Female masturbation has gotten a lot more comfortable, with literally hundreds of vibrating items available in every shape and size imaginable. Further, they’re much more readily available. A variety of sex stores are found in most cities and a plethora of online retailers provide a multitude of vibrators for women.
