A recent incident at an airport has pushed vibrators for women into the national spotlight. Some are chuckling over the story, while others are rightfully concerned about their own privacy. Is it time to change the way we travel with vibrators?

A vibrator story
No one likes going to the airport, especially these days. Security is getting more strict all the time, and it seems like the list of restricted items grows every year. Now, women have another reason to hate traveling. Recently, an airport security agent got a little too friendly while doing a routine check — and not in the way you’re thinking.
Jill Filipovic is a professional lawyer and blogger, who probably didn’t blink twice when her bag was pulled aside for a regular security screening. She was on her way to Dublin to deliver a talk at Trinity College about feminism, sexual assault and abortion. She moved through security, boarded her plant and went on her way. Filipovic didn’t find anything amiss until later, when she opened up her luggage to find a note from a security agent next to her vibrator. The note read, “Get your freak on girl.”

An investigation has been conducted and completed, with the responsible employee identified and disciplined. But the story has still become national news, opening the door for a national discussion about vibrators for women. Maybe it’s time we start talking about them.
Vibrator-Gate, part two
The ladies of The View quickly picked up the vibrator story. It’s not the first time they’ve discussed similar subject matter. In 2009, the talk show hosts got into a well-publicized debate with Morning Joe’s Mike Brzezinski regarding vibrators for women in a back-and-forth dubbed “Vibrator-Gate.”
Vibrators and morning coffee? Sure, why not? If it’s among the items that airport security guards can manhandle, it’s open for discussion any time. Vibrators for women are personal items, but so are underwear and bras — and if security agents are pawing through your luggage, they’re going to be pawing through these things as well. Still, that doesn’t mean you have to publicize your sex life. Sometimes, the best vibrators may be the styles that are the most discreet. It’s good to draw attention to vibrators sometimes, but you may not be ready to fight that battle when you’re fighting your way through the airport.
Discreet vibrators for women
Sex toy manufacturers are becoming more creative all the time. Some of the best vibrators you’ll find on the market look like anything but sex toys. Who would look twice at a sweet little rubber duckie, a meditation stone, a drop necklace or a shower sponge? Yet all of these items are also vibrators — when you buy them from the right place. Some vibrators for women are sold to look like make-up brushes, lipstick tubes, even USB storage devices that actually function.

Vibrator use is often considered to be recreational, for good reason, but it has a medical application as well. Vibrators help you get lubricated and increase your sexual desire, which prevents painful sex (dyspareunia). Healthy vibrator use also helps to prevent vaginal atrophy that occurs when you stop having vaginal intercourse.
