The Kegel problem

Kegel exercises for women may be a little too commonly recommended, in fact. Many physicians seem to take it for granted that women are familiar with the exercises, and that they can perform them perfectly on their own without any assistance whatsoever. Kegels are commonly prescribed for women who are experiencing female dryness and other intimacy issues, but rarely do those physicians provide women with instruction, follow-up appointments or even further information that will allow them to find help with learning and performing Kegel exercises.

For women, it’s very painful and embarrassing to discuss sexual and bladder issues with a physician, and there are multiple surveys and studies that prove it. When the physician doesn’t follow-up on the prescribed Kegels, their female patients may never bring the exercises up on their own.

According a national health survey of Americans, almost 24 percent of all adult women have at least one type of pelvic floor disorder – whether it’s incontinence, bladder slippage or something else. The pelvic floor is the group of muscles that keeps the bladder in place, but they also surround the vagina. Kegels are an effective way of toning and strengthening these muscles, thus reducing problems like painful sex and unwanted bladder leaks…but Kegels aren’t the only option.

Pfilates

Pfilates is an exercise program developed by urogynecologist Bruce Craword. He began to develop the method after performing more than 2,500 surgeries for women suffering from urinary incontinence. He began studying moves from Pilates, yoga and personal trainers, and hooked up volunteers to an electromyography machine. Among these moves, he found 10 that provided maximum effect for the muscles of the pelvic floor and the lower abdomen, gluteus and thigh adductors – muscles that work with the pelvic floor.

Those 10 moves became Pfilates, a complete workout routine involving repeated exercises. An at-home kit, which includes an instructional DVD, is available for women who want to give the routine a try. “You can feel yourself do a lunge, contract the glutes,” said Christina Daly, who took the course. “With more sensory feedback, you’re more likely to stay with it.” Daly is also a physiotherapist at Work-Fit Total Therapy at Oakville Trafalgar Hospital.

Certain exercises can make pelvic floor problems even worse, research shows. Weight lifting, for example, can greatly exacerbate problems. The Pfilates routine could help women practice healthy exercises to treat dyspareunia and other pelvic floor problems, and still workout lower body muscles in a healthy way.
