Endometriosis

The most common symptom of endometriosis is pelvic pain, closely followed by dyspareunia. Endometriosis is a chronic, glandular condition that requires medical treatment and may occur at any time in a woman’s life. There are many symptoms associated with this condition, including low-grade fever, but many of them are very mild and may go unnoticed. The painful sex, dyspareunia, can easily be written off as something else. It feels like a sexual symptom, and studies show that women don’t like to talk about sexual symptoms — not even with their physicians.

Focusing on dyspareunia

Dyspareunia is a very noticeable symptom, and may have very drastic effects on a woman’s sex life. The pain may limit sexual activity dramatically, or even put a stop to it altogether. The reduction of sex may lead to negativity in intimate relationships, low self-esteem in women and even vaginal atrophy, a condition in which the vaginal walls shrink and potentially close up. Women who feel they are unable to have sex because of the pain may suffer stress and other troubling emotions.

But they may not feel that they have a medical problem. Data shows that many women are unwilling to talk about painful sex. Menopausal women in particular may experience female dryness which can cause dyspareunia. Estrogen is responsible for keeping the vagina healthy, and as the hormone is reduced through the very natural process of menopause your body’s lubrication may change. Female dryness may fool women into believing they are experiencing less sexual desire or that their lady parts just aren’t working right, but it’s actually a common symptom of menopause that can be treated in a variety of ways.

For some women, dyspareunia may be the only noticeable symptom of endometriosis — particularly menopausal women. Painful, irregular periods are a common earmark of endometriosis, but women who are not experiencing regular menstruation because of menopause will not notice this symptom. If you’re experiencing painful sex, don’t wait for the problem to work itself out. Consult with a physician, because treatment for the problem may be necessary.

Treating dyspareunia

The best way to treat dyspareunia is to find out what’s causing it by visiting a physician. If you are having painful sex due to female dryness, dyspareunia may be treated at home with a number of different methods. If you are experiencing something more severe, you may need a course of medication or further evaluation.

Vaginal estrogen cream, lubricants, even sexual practices can help to treat female dryness — and by extension, dyspareunia that is caused by female dryness. Vaginal estrogen cream will deliver needed hormones right to your vaginal walls. Lubricants help to supplement natural lubrication that’s lacking in female dryness. Extended foreplay, Kegel exercises for women, vibrators for couples and other sex toys can help to increase natural lubrication.
