How does your pH balance affect female dryness?

Vagisil and other feminine products promise to improve your pH balance, but can that really affect female dryness? Isn’t female dryness something that happens because of changing estrogen levels, stress, certain medications and other medical factors? The answer is yes…to both.

Female dryness

Any woman can experience female dryness at any time in her life; it’s a problem that the young and old may endure at some point. However, menopause very commonly causes female dryness in women as their bodies are re-adjusting to the decreasing amount of estrogen in their system. But it can also be caused by your personal pH balance.

Excessive washing of the vagina can actually upset your natural pH balance. The vaginal area has a slightly acidic balance normally; this keeps it naturally healthy. Women do not put soap inside their bodies; doing so can absolutely disrupt the vagina’s natural pH balance. When you clean yourself, you should only clean the vagina externally with soap. Special products are available to clean the interior of the vagina.

Products like Vagisil, which seek to re-balance a woman’s pH, may be effective if improper pH is leading to female dryness. Lubricants are an easy solution for women who are experiencing problems with female dryness. Make sure they’re water-based, and keep them handy for when those intimate moments arrive.

Treating female dryness

Using products to re-balance your pH and supplementing your natural moisture with lubrication can be an effective way to manage female dryness, but there are other methods. Sometimes, you don’t need to start using extra products to address the problem – you may need to use fewer.

  • Drink water. One of the best natural ways to treat female dryness is to simply drink water. Increase your hydration overall to increase the amount of moisture you have in your most intimate area.
  • Eliminate. Look at the products you use to bathe, the products you use for laundry and any lotions or perfumes you may be applying to or near your vagina. The dyes and chemicals in these products could be causing a reaction that leads to female dryness. Avoid products containing vinegar, and don’t use bubble bath or highly perfumed soap. These products can cause infection which leads to female dryness. If you want bubbles, avoid specialized bubble baths and add a few drops of liquid body wash to your bath water instead. Often, body wash is much less irritating to your intimate areas.
