Fifty shades of vibrator use

Vibrator use is being advertised on TV and sold in grocery stores, and lots of people are giving credit to the indie hit Fifty Shades of Grey for the open, frank way everyone’s suddenly discussing sex. How soon we forget the glory days of Sex & the City, when our heroines weren’t fresh-faced young innocents but savvy, wise-cracking women in heels who had already been around the block well before we met them. Sex is nothing new, and every few years something breaks through the ceiling of silence to make the topic mainstream again — just don’t anybody tell the media, because they have very short memories.

The book that boosted vibrator sales?

Lots of writers are giving credit to Fifty Shades for a recent spike in sex toys, including vibrators for women, among other things. It certainly isn’t the first erotic novel to explore bondage, S&M and other sexual fantasies that aren’t generally discussed in polite company…but it might as well be. The fan reaction and press reaction to the Fifty Shades trilogy has been huge, and despite the age of its characters it’s being heralded as a book that’s well-beloved by middle-aged women.

According to reports, Trojan has sold more than 300,000 vibrators for women in drugstores around the nation — a spike that some have linked to the wildly popular book. The truth is, vibrator use was the “in” thing well before everyone became aware of this sleeper hit, and in fact sales of vibrators for women have been steadily climbing for years. Even in recession, vibrators for women remain big sellers. Over the past two years, the sex toy industry has experienced a 30 percent growth spike.

And while Fifty Shades is a popular book for a variety of great reasons, it’s not responsible for the success of the sex industry. As a matter of fact, the industry has been booming in recent years — both before and after the book became available for public consumption. Lovehoney, a well-known vibrator maker in the UK, experienced a spike of millions in revenue from March 2010 to March 2011. Fifty Shades of Grey wasn’t published until May 2011.

Best vibrator book?

There’s no question that Fifty Shades is erotic, exciting and unusual for women who are used to reading more sedate and much softer romance novels. The domineering nature of leading man Christian Grey is both frightening and thrilling, and the journey of the innocent Anastasia Steele is very compelling reading. But even without Fifty Shades of Grey, the sex toy industry would be booming and vibrators for women would still be available on the open market.

But thanks to the book, more people are discussing sex, sex toys and experimentation — and that’s good news for vibrant women. Menopause often brings sexual discomfort, dryness and other physical problems that disrupt intimacy between mature partners. Talking about sex helps women learn more about their own bodies, and any book that encourages open sexual discussion is certainly laudable. If you find you like Fifty Shades, explore other erotica books to find inspiration, ideas for sexual exploration and the sexual arousal that can be hard to come by during menopause. It’s the most popular erotica book to come along in quite some time, but it’s far from the only erotica book that’s out there. Maybe you’ll even find one with a heroine who isn’t in her 20s.
