The dark truth of dyspareunia
Dyspareunia, commonly known as painful sex, may occur in women of any age. However, it’s most frequently linked to menopausal or post-menopausal women because estrogen is the primary hormone that’s responsible for vaginal health. As your estrogen levels naturally lower through the menopause process, changes occur that directly affect the vagina. The symptom of dyspareunia is always the same, though: painful sexual intercourse. The causes may be a little more difficult to pinpoint, because women may be suffering from more than one.
- Estrogen
When a desire to have sex is still present but natural lubrication doesn’t respond to healthy lust, female dryness may be caused by lack of estrogen.

It’s possible treat this form of female dryness by addressing the cause, not the symptom. Vaginal estrogen cream will deliver the estrogen your body needs right at the source where it needs it. Estrogen cream will compel your body into creating its own natural lubrication again.
- Medication
Some prescription medications cause dry mouth. Likewise, some meds may cause female dryness. If you’re experiencing a skewed desire-to-lubrication ratio, check your medications with your pharmacist, physician or through your own research efforts. Check all possible side effects for everything you’re taking, no matter how innocuous it may seem, to discover if your meds are the possible cause of your dyspareunia.

You don’t necessarily have to change your medications to overcome the dyspareunia they create. To treat this form of female dryness, try supplemental lubricants. Water-based lubricants are body-safe, and a handy substitute for natural lubrication when all your sexual cylinders don’t seem to be firing.
- Sexual desire
Of course, dyspareunia and female dryness can also be caused by a garden-variety lack of desire. There’s a lot that goes on in the female psyche, particularly when hormones are somehow out-of-whack, and dryness can be common after pregnancy and during menopause. Stress, emotional distress, exhaustion and plain lack of desire may all cause female dryness.
If you find your sexual desire waning, try engaging in foreplay with a partner. Erotic message, sexy reading, vibrators intended for couples and lots of other sexual elements may be introduced into the bedroom to rekindle the fires. Often, extreme body changes can make women shy away from sex, but it’s healthy to engage in sexual activity. Avoiding sex can lead to many other problems with sexual health itself and with intimate relationships.
