50 Shades of Grey

I haven’t been here in a while. I have been engrossed in the 50 Shades of Grey. Has anyone else read this series and if so what did you think about them?

I admitted to reading them, right here on VN in a post called “Fifty Shades of Fun.” As I recall, nobody even liked that post, which still makes me giggle. What did you think about the series?

Loved them! A little repetitive. If you take out all the sex you have the movie, Pretty Woman. My husband and I both read them and we began to talk about the characters as tho they were our friends.

I just couldn’t get into the first book — got as far as 14% on my Kindle but this took me 2 weeks!!  I kept thinking — this is an exact copy of Nine and a Half Weeks! I read that and saw the movie and can’t say that I “liked” either one but found them “interesting”. I like to read a book that has a story with action (loved all of Brad Thor’s books), intrigue (love most of Beverly Connor and Iris Johannsen) and complex characters (both of the above authors).  The first book just didn’t provide any of these qualities so I stopped at 14% and decided that I didn’t want to spend my precious days (and now that I’m older than when reading 9 1/2 weeks, my days really are precious!) reading drivel.  Some of my work colleagues love the books but I guess that’s the reason there are so many different types of books out there. I say, the author had a very good marketing machine but I wouldn’t say that these books are for the “thinking woman”.

I tried…I really did, but I got very bored very quickly. Maybe I’ll try again when I go to the beach in a couple of weeks. But usually if I have to try that hard to like something, I don’t bother. I have several friends who have read the…some with the same opinion as mine, and some of them liked them.

I liked the ENDING of the first book – made me want to start the second one.  Then there were a couple of interesting events in the second book, and again the ENDING made me want to read further.
So I start the 3rd one tonight – with a LOT of skimming.  Cuz I agree – the sex got very boring very quickly.

Read all three books in quick succession and they were…interesting. How much sex can two people have???

Currently reading a book of the same genre, “Bared to You” which is virtually the same thing, but the characters seem a little more, for lack of a better term, “real”.

Honestly, I wanted to discover for myself what all the fuss was about. These books are a far cry from my usual historical fiction/non fiction choices that dominate my bookshelves and e-reader.

It took me two weeks to get through the first two chapters, just like gdbland above, then on Friday afternoon I decided to give it another go.  Boy am I glad I did.  The love story was okay but the sex stuff, I had never heard of some of these things, so I did some googling and really got an education.  Not that I would like to be cuffed, cropped or chained but I am amazed that the author wrote it but never experienced it.  Can’t wait to start the second book
