Underwear after 50: 9 essential pieces Hot Conversation

  1. A biker pant shapewear piece
Every woman should have a biker pant shapewear piece. If it’s high rise, it will come up and over your tummy and then down your thighs a little bit. It just smooths you out.
  2. A shaping camisole.
The second shapewear piece you should always have is a shaping camisole. These are really nice because they take out all the bumps and lumps on your back. As we get older we get soft tissue on our back which causes that back fat look. That’s why when you wear a T-shirt, you can tell that we older women have a bra on. It’s just because our back tissue isn’t as firm as it was–so when a structured garment goes on, it causes bumps. But if you stick a shapewear camisole over your bra, or sometimes wear it without a bra depending on how large you are, it just smooths everything out including the bumps on the side of your body.
  3. A T-shirt bra
Every woman should have a T-shirt bra. We all wear a T-shirt sometimes, and when we do, we want a smooth look. You can achieve this with a T-shirt bra. A T-shirt bra is a seamless cup bra with a thin layer of foam in the cup for modesty purposes, so your nipples don’t show.
  4. A sexy bra.
A woman should have a fun, lacy, sexy bra that she wears in the evening because it makes her feel good. I really believe that. Black is fabulous, so I recommend that.
  5. A strapless bra
We all need a strapless bra. There are some great ones out there that give great support no matter what your size. I’m a real believer in strapless bras.
  6. A front closure bra or a racerback bra
I think everybody needs a front closure bra or a racer back bra (which generally closes in front) because we all want to be able to go sleeveless when we’re in menopause and have hot flashes, or are simply in the hot sun. Plus, when you wear these you can wear a cutaway top and your bra straps won’t show. I don’t think there’s anything attractive about a bra strap showing.
  7. A variety of panties
I definitely lean towards the bikini style. I think it’s flattering to women as we get older.
  8. A thong you can stand
Every woman should have a thong that she can stand, because the person in your life just likes that. The important thing is to be comfortable.
  9. Boy shorts
At our age, boy shorts are actually very comfortable and they’re very smooth as well because a boy short brief comes down far enough on your leg that you don’t have panty lines. High cut briefs are what cause panty lines, so a full brief will also eliminate panty lines.

Don’t wear underwear-therefore no panty lines.  Per my OB/GYN, women need to let “private area”  breath to reduce vaginal infections.  Plus, I work out, so I have a small tight butt.

yes!!!  When I wear pants, no, I don’t want to wash pants each time I wear them, but when I wear a dress, especially a long one, I go COMMANDO! and love it!   (so does hubby btw)

Speaking of bras, as a 6 year Breast Cancer Survivor of a double mastectomy, there are NO bras out there that are suitable for us.  We don’t need a wire support, or a 4 hook wide, heavy bra that brings our fake boobs up, we are not young and high and pointy – no we want to look normal, and if that means hanging a little, sobeit.  Mastectomy survivors need better choices.  That would be my underwear “must have”!  But, where are they?

I’m also a breast cancer survivor and found the best bra ever which is part of the Hanes “Barely There” collection. It is like a racing bra, but much thinner, an all in one which simply slips over the head.  Bras are hateful things at best, but this one is comfy and probably not too expensive.  Try http://www.hanes.com  and see if you can find one.  They come in nude and black. Good luck.

I spent several years saying I would never wear thongs because I had spent half my life trying to keep my panties out of my…well, you get the idea.  However – Ahem – However, I have found now after suffering through the beginning seizures, that they are quite comfortable.  Much like beer or dry wine, one must acquire a taste. Also, I despise seeing panty lines that have hitched up on cheeks – through knit clothing.  This keeps that from happening.  Try it.  I sometimes go sans underwear, but I somehow feel sexier wearing thongs than nothing.  Don’t do boy shorts – those tend to push the cheeks of my ass more south than they are traveling on their own.  Love racerback bras – other ones tend to slip constantly.  I also don’t mind some erection in the breast area on occasion – as long as its not too blatant and my children (or grandchildren) are not in viewing area.

Wearig a shaping camisole with a t-shirt in Houston, Tx in summer is INSANE!  At this point in the summer, the t-shirt is optional.  I don’t care how the arms and back fat look, it is a tank top for me. It’s called survival.

      Hear hear!

I haven’t worn a T-shirt in ages (except to sleep in) – they don’t flatter me and so I don’t wear them.

(Besides, the older you yet, the more ridiculous a T-shirt looks on you. That statement will probably start a flame war, but it’s my opinion and I believe it.)

My “underwear” would be NAKED!!  Tired of cutting bras (and going to “classes” on how to fit you into  them.)  Panties…would be boxer shorts.. Of course this is for when you get home….The other “underwear” is when you have to go to work! :-(

I’m late coming into this conversation, but Soma has some very comfortable lingerie.  Modern briefs that don’t look like Granny Pants, but fit well for the mature shape, comfy bras, etc.  Checki it out.

Hello, being raised by a proper southern momma, I have to ask…doesn’t anyone wear slips any longer?  It’s getting harder and harder to find them, but unless my dress is lined I don’t feel dressed without one…is my age showing?  :-)

Oh yeah – I hear you.  I don’t feel properly dressed without my slip.  My momma taught me well – and I guess I taught my daughter well because she wears slips with unlined dresses also!

Tell us more about eliminating panty lines, please. I can’t seem to get rid of them. Am I buying panties that are tighter than they should be, maybe?

Bikini?  I have a midlife belly.  How are bikinis flattering to most women my age?  I would say high cut briefs all the way to the b button!

Amen sister!  I have 30 yr old stretch marks and a midlife sag.  Biknin?  Not in this lifetime.  How abolut the manufacturers make some NICE full coverage briefs for a change?

I am only comfortable in “full coverage” briefs. Bikinis or high cuts leave some crazy panty lines.

Nicole Miller makes some great micro-fiber panties that I buy in three-packs at Sam’s Club. I have given them to my girlfriends and they love them too.

I am addicted to the high wasted biker pant shapewear! They really smooth out all the lumps and provide a nice firm feeling that minimizes jiggles!  I  like Bodywrap because they come in plus sizes and I have a pair for every day of the week.

Here is a plug for a new Canadian product that I’ve tried and quite like:  http://www.shatobu.com/en-ca/  It is a body shaper that actually burns calories when you wear it!

I live for snap-crotch bodysuits by Wolford ! Pricey yes but they last a lifetime with hand washing and simplify getting dressed.  You never have to think about this layering piece bunching or riding up unexpectedly. I wear  sleeveless tank bodysuits year-round – under matte jersey wrap dresses that are cut a bit too low at the neck, under cardigans, under very fitted  V-neck winter sweaters and skinny jeans. The long sleeve versions work solo as tops with skirts or pants and easily slide under jackets and suits. My staple. Hellooo If anyone wants to give me a Christmas gift…

I am very disappointed that you forgot a good sports bra!!  All of the articles you mentioned can be very expensive, and I wear my comfortable & reasonable-priced sports bra whenever I am just at home.  I think it saves on the wear & tear of the other bras so they last longer.  You all should be doing some form of exercise, ladies!!  There is nothing better than a good sports bra (after trying several brands, I have found Champion to be superior!) when you are working out–it’s required for comfort, support, and ease of movement.  I would drop those uncomfortable boy shorts and move sports bra much higher up the list.

Those all sound nice, but I enjoy no bra whatsoever.  I do, however, wear men’s A-shirts with the neck cut out.  A size smaller than normal, so it gives a bit of smoothing.  Can’t stand anything tight around me, and this works!  After awhile, the nipple gets used to the rubbing against clothing and stop being hard all the time.  I’m not well endowed, so that helps, but I fully embrace the “Burning the Bra” era!  Free and no guess work!  Here I am!  This is all I’ve Got!  Not easy to look good in an evening gown, I’m sure, so for that I would have to go with a camisole.  Most women’s under garments are made out of ‘unbreathable’ materials.  This prohibits proper air flow.  And, provides a wonderful habitat for infections.  As gaulding is bound to happen when breasts and belly meet, be generous with simple old cornstarch!  Stay away from talcs and perfumy types of powders or you can cause more infections.

As for underwear, Yes, my husband loves the sexy lingerie, especially the thong!  But, I only wear them for him at home, in the bedroom, when I feel very frisky!  Otherwise, it’s the plain old Hanes, white, full panty.  Love them, swear by them!  No panty lines if they are the right size.
