Top 8 favorite things about Richmond, Virginia

I’m a lifelong resident of Richmond, Virginia. Here is my list of the best things about Richmond. It may give you some good ideas for what to do when you visit, or if you are already lucky enough to live in Richmond, what you can do to entertain out-of-town guests and show off our great city.

1. Favorite restaurants for lunch: Can Can (the beet salad is great, but so is everything else); Mediterranean Bakery and Deli; Arcade Cafe on Grove; Mekong (no atmosphere but great authentic Vietnamese); and Ginger in Carytown.

3. Favorite places to shop for clothes: Saks; Annette Dean; Philosophy; Coplan’s; Levy’s; The Phoenix; Frances Kahn; Irresistibles; Peter Blair (a great – as in “Richmond conservative” men’s clothing shop; the owner, my friend Dick Fowlkes, is the most entertaining man alive).

4. Favorite sources of gifts and accessories: Tweeds; Paper Plus (my sister’s shop! My mother is there too — they are darling, and will help you with whatever you want to know about Richmond); 5708 Patterson; Carytown (allow time to work the whole street — lots of interesting shops).

5. Favorite galleries: Page Bond Gallery; 43rd Street Gallery; 1708; Quirk; Bev Reynolds.

Favorite insider secrets: For the Love of Chocolate (fabulous imported candies); milkshakes at the Dairy Bar; potato salad from Sally Bell’s Kitchen; tea at the Jefferson Hotel; Limeades from Phil’s; extensive selection of old fashioned nightgowns, slips, and French hand-sewing supplies upstairs at Chadwick Heirlooms; cool one-of-a-kind jewelry at Quirk Gallery; Tan-A Asian supermarket, for anything Asian, especially the oriental vegetables; Greek salad at Frank’s West; scarves at Ten Thousand Villages; Ellwood Thompson’s cookies; Frankie Slaughter’s studio (art clothing); music at Enzo’s outside patio on weekend summer nights; The Attic (consignment home furnishings); Caravati’s and E.T. Moore (architectural salvage); Williams and Sherrill (fabric, furniture, accessories); Joe’s Market (specialty grocery); Infuzion’s Ice Lounge (all made of ice — for sampling different vodkas); Pleasants Hardware (a great old fashioned, has-everything hardware store).
