I love this convertible skirt for trips when you need to go out to dinner but only want to bring one suitcase. It barely needs an iron, doesn’t pill, and is appropriate for warm summer evenings in Tuscany or a dinner in Florence. The longer version features an offset slit and hidden zipper pocket. I love the lower waistband and seamless zippers.

Zip-off pants are historically ugly and nothing you would want to wear off the trail. When traveling on a long hiking trip, they are also necessary, as weather can change dramatically in an hour and having the flexibility of shorts and pants in one is ideal. The zip-offs are made of Schoeller fabric, which means rain (or red wine) bead off the pants. They don’t pill or pick.

Have you ever found yourself wearing a trash bag because your supposedly “waterproof” jacket isn’t making the grade? I tried 30 jackets that didn’t work before I found this little number. I love it because it’s stylish, features pit and side zippers, and the hood actually fits comfortably! It remains in my pack no matter what the weather because it works as a great layer for most conditions and weighs only 11 ounces.

While hats, and the accompanying “hat hair,” aren’t my favorite thing, I’ve found I can live with wearing one of these fashionable accessories. They come in varying weights, are warm, and don’t scratch. They’re also not too tight. I love the fleece band on the inside, cool designs, and great colors.

The sheer number of available energy bars is staggering, so they have to be really good, healthy, and interesting to catch my attention. ALPSNACKs have managed to find a place in my backpack on international hiking trips. I like the variety of the bars’ unusual flavors: Plums and Currents; Apricots and Cranberries; Coconut, Mango & Pineapple; Fair Trade Dark Chocolate; and Fair Trade Espresso Chocolate. They’re delicious, satisfying, gluten free, and vegan friendly. What more could you ask?

Two 8-ounce trial-size bottles of this magical potion lasted my entire five-week stint through Italy, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Russia. The best part was that my clothes smelled great, and when you are wearing the same items repeatedly that counts for a lot! This organic concoction cleans your body, hair, laundry, floors, counters, walls, dishes, pets, fruits, and vegetables, and even works for shaving. It comes in a variety of scents including Almond, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Baby-Mild, and Tea Tree. There’s even no need to feel guilty disposing of the bottles, as they are made of 100 percent post-consumer recycled plastic.

My favorite luggage right now is a Samsonite 19″ Expandable Spinner. I can take everything for two weeks as a carry-on and the “spinner” (4 wheels) saves my wrists and arms while moving it through the airport. I can put my laptop bag on top of it and push the entire unit easily. When I bring home a few gifts and a bottle of Olive Oil, I can expand the compartment and check the bag in on the way home. (Always carry on–if you can–on the way to a trip.) In this little suitcase I’ve gotten five pairs of shoes, sandals and sneakers, professional dress attire, and hiking/workout cloths…all carry on!
