Top 5 favorite jazz CDs

1. Ella Fitzgerald, Ella in Berlin (Verve) – Ranging from ballads (Gershwin’s “Summertime”) to witty takes on sex and love (“Too Darn Hot,” “Lorelei”), this is the First Lady at her peak.

2. Thelonious Monk, Thelonious Alone in San Francisco (Original Jazz Classics) – Quirkily elegant solo piano by one of jazz’s modern masters.

3. Jerry Gonzalez Y Los Piratas del Flamenco (Sunnyside) – Introspective and lyrical. Trumpeter Gonzalez creates an outstanding fusion of flamenco and jazz.

4. Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Moanin’ (Blue Note) – Soulful, exuberant and essential!

5. Lou Rawls (with Les McCann), Stormy Monday (Blue Note) – You might know him as a top 40 soul balladeer, but on this disc, Lou’s blues and gospel roots are the main thing. One of my all-time favorite jazz vocal albums.
