My top 10 favorite holiday CDs

If you’re looking for holiday gift ideas or a great musical backdrop for that special holiday feast, here is a list of my favorite holiday music. Any one CD on this list would make a terrific gift. (I’ve grouped the CDs by type of music, so just choose one that fits the recipients’ musical tastes!)

Traditional

1. Christmas Star by The Cambridge Singers and Orchestra
A rich, heart-warming mix of traditional European hymns and carols, plus America folk songs and spirituals; it just floats in the air.

Country Bluegrass Alt Country

1. Let There Be Peace on Earth by Vince Gill
Traditional songs and carols from one of warmest voices in any genre. You don’t have to like country to like this.

2. Light of the Stable Emmylou Harris
Some familiar carols and a few lesser known, all with the special ELH touch. Her voice is an instrument unto itself.

3. Bluegrass and White Snow: A Mountain Christmas by Patty Loveless
A gorgeous mountain treatment of old favorites; don’t miss the duet with Rebecca Lynn Howard of Little Drummer Boy.

4. Christmas by Chris Isaak
A little rockabilly, a little West Coast, a little mellow, and of course, because it’s Chris Isaak, a little cheek. How can you lose?

Rock and Roll Oldies

1. Christmas with the Beach Boys by The Beach Boys
Jam-packed CD, with all their old holiday hits (Little Saint Nick, The Man With All The Toys) and some cool surprises.

2. The Jethro Tull Christmas Album by Jethro Tull
If you’re not a big Tull fan, don’t let the name put you off. This is loaded with real Old World carols, beautifully arranged, with just the light touch of Tull. You’ll swear you’ve beamed back in time to some castle on the heath, with a steaming bowl of wassail on the groaning board.

3. A Christmas Gift for You by Phil Spector
THE classic album of Christmas rockin’ from the Wall of Sound boy genius and his stable of artists: Darlene Love, The Ronettes, The Crystals. No holiday collection is complete without it.

Celtic

1. To Drive the Cold Winter Away by Loreena McKennitt
There are plenty of specialty albums by Celtic artists, but these are two favorites of mine by Loreena McKennitt that you shouldn’t miss.

2. A Winter Garden by Loreena McKennitt
Like the Tull album, both of these have the feel of another time and place, with many traditional favorites like The Coventry Carol and God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen. Great for Winter Solstice celebrations, too.

A personal favorite in our house, by a trio of sisters who are now vibrant women themselves: The Roches’
    We Three Kings.

Mariah Carey’s “Merry Christmas” cd is great, although it’s good to get some other recommendations. Our sons groan whenever we put the Mariah Carey one on, as it’s been our go-to holiday music for too long.

In my opinion, you have excellent taste! I’d add Elvis’ Christmas Album to the list – there’s nothing quite like hearing Elvis sing Blue Christmas.
