My 4 favorite books about wine

At Women & Wine, we have a team that pores over all the books about wine–but in general, I try to read books that are not about wine. I believe that women learn and communicate best about wine through stories. So, I try to stay away from that professional track so that I can educate people about wine experientially. Here are four of my favorite books about wine.

1. Passion on the Vine : A Memoir of Food, Wine, and Family in the Heart of Italy by Sergio Esposito
Sergio Esposito runs Italian Wine Merchants and he wrote this book about taking his parents (and his children back to Italy on one of his wine-buying trips and revisiting the winemakers whose wines he has. Esposito writes in an incredible voice. I felt like I was in Italy, growing up at the tables in Naples with him.

2. The Wine Bible by Karen MacNeil
Karen MacNeil’s The Wine Bible has sold three million copies–it’s is the largest-selling wine book and is about to re-released. Karen MacNeil reminds me of a young Audrey Hepburn in her looks and her style. A lot of her clients are high-testosterone, wealthy men, but she communicates in a way which women can relate to because she’s very sensual in how she speaks and very poetic in her tones. She’s very informative without being geeky.

3. Windows on the World by Kevin Zraly
This series is a favorite for anyone interested in really learning about wine-tasting from a master. Any of the books in this series is amazing. The most newly released one is great. Kevin Zraly is very knowledgeable, with an unusual teaching style: very impactful, informative, and accessible at the same time.

4. How to Taste by Jancis Robinson
Jancis Robinson is an amazing writer about wine for women. She also has a blog, which I also recommend. I always say to people, find a voice that appeals to you and then start following that person because most people write a blog based on a particular passion (like Pinot), or maybe they love the wines of Italy. It’s very personal.
