1. The Glass Castle: A Memoir Jeannette Wells’ candid memoir of her often dangerous, dirt-poor childhood (the secret she kept from the tony New Yorkers as she evolved into a journalist covering celebrities) has enabled many readers, including me, to re-visit my childhood. This book helped me to discover the power of resilience and to see others as they see themselves. |

2. Learned Optimism: How to Change Your Mind and Your Life One of the surest ways to evolve into living at the upper end of your emotional set point between pessimism and optimism is to read this research-based, compassionate book. Take the quiz. (Ask a friend or spouse to share this experience with you.) A great way to jumpstart the new year for living a bigger, more upbeat life. |

3. Carved in Sand: When Attention Fails and Memory Fades in Midlife by Cathryn Jakobson Ramin When in her forties the author started getting more forgetful, she began a quest, visiting various doctors and brain researchers to learn what she could do. She takes various treatments and explores various reasons for brain changes as we age. Other books cover similar ground but Cathryn’s conversational style is particularly engaging – and enabled me to take steps to keep my brain active. Good to read with Norman Doidge’s book, The Brain That Changes Itself. |

I first discovered Carved in Sand when I was researching Early Onset Alzheimer’s for my psychology class. It’s very humorous as well as informative. I highly recommend it. If you want to read a book that will really stay with you try Still Alice by Lisa Genova; it’s about a woman with EOA–scary, but ultimately hopeful and uplifting. Still Alice will help you to realize what’s really important in life and what makes a person who he or she is.
I was thrilled and profoundly moved by The Glass Castle. It’s compelling and you’re right, it teaches the power of resilience.

Have you heard of Cosmic Cow Pie by Carra Riley? Its an easy read and helps me every day stay in balance because I do so many things. I actually have a group together to listen to the audio book and we discuss our personal relativities to each chapter. It’s fun and by a very dedicated author!
