1. Amy Friedman I have fallen in love with this writer Amy Friedman. She is extraordinary. She did a modern love column a couple of years ago for The New York Times. And she’s just one of these writers that you really sort of love everything that she puts out in the world. She’s done a whole bunch of stories called Tell Me a Story: Timeless Folktales from Around the World. They’re CDs. Some of them are for children, but she works with tons of women. One is called Women of Wonder. So I’m catching up on all of the things that she’s written. I love her writing. |

2. Monica Holloway I’m also reading Monica Holloway’s book Cowboy & Wills: A Love Story. It’s all about her autistic child and a friendship with a golden retriever. She writes so lyrically. |

3. Pema Chodron I have Comfortable with Uncertainty: 108 Teachings on Cultivating Fearlessness and Compassion, which I read every night. It’s one of those books you just sort of flip open, where each chapter is a page. The chapter I opened this morning was Generosity, and I went, “Ooh, I like that.” Her books are all about fearlessness. |

4. Suzanne Braun Levine I’m also reading Fifty Is the New Fifty: Ten Life Lessons for Women in Second Adulthood, which I love. |

5. Various authors Another Seal Press book I’m reading is called Always Too Soon: Voices of Support for Those Who Have Lost Both Parents, and it’s an anthology of all these stories written by different people: Hope Edelman, Ice-T, Yogi Berra, Dana Buchman. When my mom died back in May, both my parents at that point had passed on. Krista Lyons sent me the book and said, “You should read it. It’ll make you feel much better,” and it does. |

6. Brenda L. Moore One more book that I’m reading is called To Serve My Country, to Serve My Race. It’s the story about the only African-American WACs stationed overseas during WWII. I’m reading this one because director Julie Dash wants to do this as a movie. |

Oh my, where to start too many to count… One favorite is, Brushed by feathers, by Frances Wood. A year of Bird Watching…
Thanks for the post!
What caught my eye this morning was the heading on VN ‘I am definitely not a calm buddhist’ but it led me to here. Amy I just read your bio. What a beautiful story. Serendipity, synchronicity etc etc. we are led by the Universe to where we need to be…but that is another post in another section of VN. Books. I love books. I buy them when I can even if I don’t read them for months or longer. When I do decide to read, I have my own library. But I don’t read the same kinds of authors I see here. right now I am reading a book titled When Legends Die by Hal Borland. It is about an American Indian boy in the 1930′s who is orphaned and forced to attend a White school. I also read Sherman Alexie books, Alice Hoffman and almost all books about animals. I am a Reiki III practioner and read Reiki books also. Just thought I would stop by and add my 2 cents.
so very good to meet you valerie!
all my love, amy
I am good friends with Amy Friedman, and I LOVE her Tell Me a Story Series. My husband is in fact one of the story tellers on the second album. I’ll get Amy to lend you her copy of my book, “Sixtyfive Roses: A Sister’s Memoir” to add to your nightstand!!
Now I have more titles to add to my list of books to read. I am currently reading Jodi Picoult’s House Rules (about an autistic boy who is accused of killing his therapist), I’m Still Standing by Shoshana Johnson (about the first black woman POW) and One Good Dog by Susan Wilson. As I am trying to keep my book buying down in this economy, I am picking up The Cross Gardener by Jason Wright at the library. Since I loved The Wednesday Letters so much, I am very excited to start The Cross Gardener. I love to look at the new bestsellers at Wal Mart and get on the wait list at the library. Sometimes they don’t have them at the library yet, but if I get on the wait list, I am usually the first person to get them when they come in. Unfortunately, they don’t have Marrying George Clooney so I may have to resort to Amazon.
Currently reading James Patterson’s Cross Country and Women Food and God (I’ve read about 2/3 and am just not finding the answers that I had hoped for). Next in line Finger Lickin’ Fifteen, T is for Trespass, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, and This Book is Overdue. I buy 3/4 of my books used, sporadically use the public library. My husband doesn’t understand why I buy so many books and don’t get around to reading them. I keep telling him that I buy more than I can read so that when we retire and have less money, I’ll still have books! I also supply my sister and niece – they read faster than I do, plus, I read more of a variety and I am a K-7 school librarian and read a lot of childrens books which I love. I enjoy seeing what others are reading and have bought a few titiles from posts I’ve read on VN!
Books, I’ve been reading are a bit strange. Firstly, I have recently got engaged which is very different at our age. I want to keep it simple but fun, so i am reading, Anti-Bride Guide: Tying the Knot Outside of the Box BY Carolyn Gerin, Offbeat Bride: Creative Alternatives for Independent Brides By Ariel Stallings and Let’s Elope: The Definitive Guide to Eloping, Destination Weddings, and Other Creative Wedding Options by Scott Shaw!! Another Amazing book thst just came out is “The Best of Everything After 50″ by Barbara Hannah Grufferman, It is with me always, it’s my new Bible!!!! Great Book!!! Marrying George Clooney by Amy Ferris just to mention a few!!! Oh and Melody Beattie’s Journey to the Heart for Daily Meditiations…
I just read The Widow’s Story by Joyce Carol Oates. I very rarely read a book with a highlighter in hand, but this one I did. Oates is a genius. I’m in awe of her ability to put feelings into words on paper.
