As a writer who has written a lot of books, I think that we need to have writing heroes – writers that are better than we can basically ever hope to be. Here are some of mine.
|
1. David Sedaris I love David Sedaris. I’m just completely in awe of him. He’s so good in a way that feels very natural, and yet is impossible to achieve or imitate. |

2. Alice Munro The way Alice Munro writes feels very natural. You feel like you can trust her. As a writer, you get the feeling that, “Hey, I could do that.” Except forget it, there’s no way I could ever do that! |

3. Ian McEwan I love, love, love Ewan McEwan. |

4. Kate Atkinson Kate is Scottish and she writes mysteries. Something she does really well is, she does her characters’ voices in third person really well so that they feel very vivid and alive. She’s do a teenage girl and a middle-aged male detective and she seems to just be able to inhabit all those different characters. Also, she is able to write about serious, even gruesome stuff in a funny way. I very, very admiring of her. |

David Sedaris…love him!
