1. An American Wife This is a brilliant piece of writing. Sittenfeld was imagining the world through Laura Bush’s eyes and created an indelible character etched vividly and empathetically…while still seemingly invoking a living person, which is quite a marvel. |

2. Year of Wonders This is the first novel by Geraldine Brooks, who also wrote People of the Book and won the Pulitzer Prize for March. It tells the story of what happens to a 17th century village struck down by the plague. |

3. Nine Parts of Desire: The Hidden World of Islamic Women by Geraldine Brooks If you want to understand women in the Muslim world, read this powerful book. It’s built on Geraldine Brooks’ experience as a journalist in the Middle East. She has a novelist’s eye for extracting from the past. The book is so beautifully written that it reads like a novel—but it is part memoir, part history and all Brooks, so it’s a great read. |

I book marked your post as I intend to read those books.I have recently begun getting more interested in the history of our country and am interested in other cultures. There are plenty of easy reads out there with cookie cutter plots for recreational reading.I’m trying to keep my mind young by consistent learning throughout my life time. Thanks for a great post!
