Underwear after 50: 9 essential pieces

Entrepreneur Tomima Edmark wanted women be able to buy bras as easily as we do T-shirts or music, so in 1999 she turned to the Internet and founded HerRoom. Tomima also writes about developments in the lingerie industry on her blog, (Un)covering What's Under Everything.
  1. A biker pant shapewear piece
Every woman should have a biker pant shapewear piece. If it's high rise, it will come up and over your tummy and then down your thighs a little bit. It just smooths you out.

  2. A shaping camisole.
The second shapewear piece you should always have is a shaping camisole. These are really nice because they take out all the bumps and lumps on your back. As we get older we get soft tissue on our back which causes that back fat look. That's why when you wear a T-shirt, you can tell that we older women have a bra on. It's just because our back tissue isn't as firm as it was--so when a structured garment goes on, it causes bumps. But if you stick a shapewear camisole over your bra, or sometimes wear it without a bra depending on how large you are, it just smooths everything out including the bumps on the side of your body.

  3. A T-shirt bra
Every woman should have a T-shirt bra. We all wear a T-shirt sometimes, and when we do, we want a smooth look. You can achieve this with a T-shirt bra. A T-shirt bra is a seamless cup bra with a thin layer of foam in the cup for modesty purposes, so your nipples don't show.

  4. A sexy bra.
A woman should have a fun, lacy, sexy bra that she wears in the evening because it makes her feel good. I really believe that. Black is fabulous, so I recommend that.

  5. A strapless bra
We all need a strapless bra. There are some great ones out there that give great support no matter what your size. I'm a real believer in strapless bras.

  6. A front closure bra or a racerback bra
I think everybody needs a front closure bra or a racer back bra (which generally closes in front) because we all want to be able to go sleeveless when we're in menopause and have hot flashes, or are simply in the hot sun. Plus, when you wear these you can wear a cutaway top and your bra straps won't show. I don't think there's anything attractive about a bra strap showing.

  7. A variety of panties
I definitely lean towards the bikini style. I think it's flattering to women as we get older.

  8. A thong you can stand
Every woman should have a thong that she can stand, because the person in your life just likes that. The important thing is to be comfortable.

  9. Boy shorts
At our age, boy shorts are actually very comfortable and they're very smooth as well because a boy short brief comes down far enough on your leg that you don't have panty lines. High cut briefs are what cause panty lines, so a full brief will also eliminate panty lines.

Don't wear underwear-therefore no panty lines.  Per my OB/GYN, women need to let "private area"  breath to reduce vaginal infections.  Plus, I work out, so I have a small tight butt.

Speaking of bras, as a 6 year Breast Cancer Survivor of a double mastectomy, there are NO bras out there that are suitable for us.  We don't need a wire support, or a 4 hook wide, heavy bra that brings our fake boobs up, we are not young and high and pointy - no we want to look normal, and if that means hanging a little, sobeit.  Mastectomy survivors need better choices.  That would be my underwear "must have"!  But, where are they?

I'm also a breast cancer survivor and found the best bra ever which is part of the Hanes "Barely There" collection. It is like a racing bra, but much thinner, an all in one which simply slips over the head.  Bras are hateful things at best, but this one is comfy and probably not too expensive.  Try www.hanes.com  and see if you can find one.  They come in nude and black. Good luck.

Tried thongs and there are NONE that are comfortable enough to NEED one.

I have to agree.  My body is not made for thongs....

Try Cosabella thongs. I call them "trainer thongs" and have given them to my gfs that swore they would NEVER wear one.

I spent several years saying I would never wear thongs because I had spent half my life trying to keep my panties out of my...well, you get the idea.  However - Ahem - However, I have found now after suffering through the beginning seizures, that they are quite comfortable.  Much like beer or dry wine, one must acquire a taste. Also, I despise seeing panty lines that have hitched up on cheeks - through knit clothing.  This keeps that from happening.  Try it.  I sometimes go sans underwear, but I somehow feel sexier wearing thongs than nothing.  Don't do boy shorts - those tend to push the cheeks of my ass more south than they are traveling on their own.  Love racerback bras - other ones tend to slip constantly.  I also don't mind some erection in the breast area on occasion - as long as its not too blatant and my children (or grandchildren) are not in viewing area.

Wearig a shaping camisole with a t-shirt in Houston, Tx in summer is INSANE!  At this point in the summer, the t-shirt is optional.  I don't care how the arms and back fat look, it is a tank top for me. It's called survival.

Hear hear!

I haven't worn a T-shirt in ages (except to sleep in) - they don't flatter me and so I don't wear them.

(Besides, the older you yet, the more ridiculous a T-shirt looks on you. That statement will probably start a flame war, but it's my opinion and I believe it.)

I am a DDD and I have yet to find a strapless bra that's "up to the job".

My "underwear" would be NAKED!!  Tired of cutting bras (and going to "classes" on how to fit you into  them.)  Panties...would be boxer shorts.. Of course this is for when you get home....The other "underwear" is when you have to go to work! :-(

I'm late coming into this conversation, but Soma has some very comfortable lingerie.  Modern briefs that don't look like Granny Pants, but fit well for the mature shape, comfy bras, etc.  Checki it out.

Hello, being raised by a proper southern momma, I have to ask...doesn't anyone wear slips any longer?  It's getting harder and harder to find them, but unless my dress is lined I don't feel dressed without one...is my age showing?  :-)

Oh yeah - I hear you.  I don't feel properly dressed without my slip.  My momma taught me well - and I guess I taught my daughter well because she wears slips with unlined dresses also!

Boy-cut look horrible on large thighs, just cut you off right where you're largest.  Not flattering at all.

Tell us more about eliminating panty lines, please. I can't seem to get rid of them. Am I buying panties that are tighter than they should be, maybe?
