1. Everything should have multiple uses.
Don’t even think about taking those darling shoes that go with that cute dress. STOP! Only pack multi-use items. Save the specialty items for home, whether it is camping gear or clothes–these people will never see you again!
2. Coordinate around a color theme.
Take the phrases “mix ‘n match” and “wash ‘n wear” to heart. Make sure that everything can be worn with at least 3 other things. Save your color splashes for shirts and accessories.
3. Zip-Loc bags are your friend.
Take many! Pack nothing in its cardboard packaging. Remove it and put it in baggies. If there are instructions you need, cut them out and put them in the bag. They keep everything in a minimum of space, they keep wet from dry, and they keep everything organized. (HINT: If you’re traveling with children, put each day’s outfit in a Zip-Loc bag and you can tuck them anywhere.)
4. Plan for emergencies.
You need to be able to survive if something bad happens! Be sure to take a first aid kit, auto safety kit (flares, flashlights, tools), personal items (blanket, water, protein bars) and emergency contact information back home. Before you leave, create a computer file on a friend’s computer that contains: a vehicle description and picture, planned route, cell numbers, and a digital picture of each person on the trip. Having this will go a long way toward easing everyone’s mind.
5. Take along something you love.
Something besides your traveling companion! Whether it’s your favorite pair of slippers, the pillow off your bed, your favorite coffee mug, a candle for the table, or a flower vase for wildflowers you find along the way, you must surround yourself with things that are familiar and make you happy.
