My work with FEMA requires me to usually be on the site of the disaster within 24-36 hours after being deployed. I can’t spend time figuring out what I’m going to take or if I need to buy something. So, I keep “Go Kits” in plastic zip-lock bags at the ready. When I return home, I restock them and store them away for my next assignment or journey. “Go Kits” make packing easier and I’m less likely to forget the things I really need.
I find that I need three different Go Kits: one for medical supplies, one for toiletries, and one for documents. Here are my packing lists for each type of kit.
- Medical Go Kit
- 1 month of prescription drugs, clearly marked
- Small supply of common OCT drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, cold pills, antacid, and lomotil or other anti-diarrhea medication
- Band-aids and anti-bacterial cream
- Anti-bacterial handwash
- Toiletry Go Kit
- Toothbrush/toothpaste/floss
- Baby wipes. I use these to wash my face and hands (For two to three weeks I can do without my typical skincare routine.)
- Enough make-up to be presentable
- Hand and body cream
- Small shampoo/conditioner combo
- Extra contact lenses, eye glasses, cleaning fluid
- Document Go Kit
- Photocopy of Driver’s License and Passport (I store my passport in my travel purse.)
- Emergency contact information
- Post card labels
- Small notebook
