Top 10 Reasons to Volun-Tour

  1. If, as poet Mary Oliver says, we only get this one wild and precious life, we owe it to ourselves to experience a little more of our amazing world while we’re here.
  2. No more overseas travel envy. Hearing a friend say they vacationed in an exotic country, or they volunteered overseas, we think, “I’d like to do that” but can’t afford both. Volun-touring, you can.
  3. Enlightenment. My definition of enlightenment is “lightening our load of self-imposed limitations.” Volun-tourism is the most fun form of enlightenment you will ever experience.
  4. Guilt-free exotic travel. Even as Vibrant Women, some of us think we might feel guilty taking a trip for our own pleasure, enlightenment, and joy. Volun-Tourism lets you experience the beauty of foreign travel, while also making a difference in wherever you go.
  5. The opportunity to be the life-changing aunt, mom, or grandmother who takes a beloved teenager or young adult on the difference-making journey of a lifetime. The loved one you take with you will never be the same, and neither will you…in a good way.
  6. Two amazing experiences for the price of one. You’ll spend only part of your time volunteering, and the rest of the time, you’ll be taking in breathtaking sights, savoring amazing cuisine, laughing uproariously, and enjoying an exquisite life experience with fellow difference-makers.
  7. There’s no better way to understand a culture than to volunteer alongside local difference-makers at a children’s home or animal rescue.
  8. You get to enjoy the exotic pleasures of a foreign culture, and also give back to that culture.
  9. It’s a “get rich quick” experience. You will experience a remarkable shift in your “prosperity consciousness,” and go back feeling abundantly grateful for all that is yours to enjoy, and do and share.
  10. 100% of the time, it is a reverse mission. In my 7 years of leading an annual trip overseas, I can guarantee that the one you’ll make the biggest difference for is you.

    Hi Jana,

I am one of those people who have thought about volun-touring.  What is the best place to start?

There are plenty of websites that list volunteer vacation opportunities, and now there are even guide books. Frommer’s has one called 500 Places Where You Can Make a Difference and there’s another one entitled 700 Places to Volunteer Before You Die.

Of course, I’d love it if you joined one of Adventures in Preservation’s projects – we restore buildings and renew communities, with projects in the US and overseas. You can learn more at http://www.adventuresinpreservation.org/.

      Here’s a great site for information:  http://www.voluntourism.org/

How serious are you about wanting to explore the possibilities?

I’ve got a trip going out in the fall that we’re booking right now…to a place I fell in love with last year when i volun-toured there, and that’s Vietnam.  It’s a top vacation destination for Europeans, because it has awesome beauty, yet still feels unspoiled by tourists.  Details are at http://www.JanaStanfield.com/travel.

Can you see yourself on a trip like this?

        Hi Jana,

Just checked out the site.  Way out of my travel expenses price.  Will try to find another way to volunteer while travelling.

        Thanks.
