Five Prayers for the (downsized) Soul

Invocation for Bad Times

When the sun arrives at its new dawn, it turns towards its setting.
The moon when it is full begins to wane.
The flowering plant grows toward the sun, and from the weight of
its own blossom bends to the ground and dies.

At such a time, you may have no recourse but to tear the sack open and throw the seeds of your life to the wind
Releasing
Surrendering
Crying for mercy,

Feeling the pain.

If you are blessed with patience, you can watch many seeds blow away, rejoicing for even the one that lands at your feet.

It will take root, sending up a tender, green shoot through the dark patch of soil.

Can you find it in your heart to accept it all?

Invocation for One in Transition

May I realize that what feels to be failure is, in truth, an indication that I have mastered past levels of ambition and success.

I now find myself in a time of growth where I have become too much for the systems that once contained me.

I’ve mistaken punishment for growth as who I am becoming screams for my attention:

“Look Carefully! It is only your old, outmoded constructions that are dying. How could you not feel grief at the loss of a level of mastery that was once so important to you. But tell the whole truth, for something is birthing, too.”

Grieve the past but place your attention and energy on that which struggles to be born.

Invocation for Greatness

The solid structures that served as my bridge to the present moment,

giving me a way to traverse from old to new,

crumble beneath my feet.

With every step, I am assured that there will be no turning back.

As I cross over, may I find the strength to hold onto my faith,
Loosening the grip of my external reality,
Watching in awe and amazement

As the old structures reconfigure around my unwavering conviction.

Invocation for Inner Peace

I do not have to have it all together now to be worthy of giving and receiving love.

For this most extraordinary purpose, my ordinary self is enough.

Invocation for One Who Stands Alone

If through the twists and turns of fate, I find myself standing alone…
May I stand like a tree on a hillside
Visible from afar
Undaunted, patient, serene
Preparing myself for my moment to arrive:
The opportunity to provide shade to all those who come to seek shelter
Beneath my boughs.

There seems nothing finer or more succinct than praying the well-known Serenity Prayer, believing that God will indeed give what we need in each situation.

    The Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenityTo accept the things I cannot change;Courage to change the things I can;And wisdom to know the difference.

Completely agree.  Love the Serenity Prayer.

That said, the exercise of writing a prayer is calming, and helps me organize my own thinking/aspirations/hopes, etc.  Of course, I mostly think my efforts fall short of capturing everything going on with me and my relationship to God when I make even my best effort to commit my prayers to words.  In any case, I’m counting on my belief that God pays more attention to the impulse to pray than the actual words we use!

Thank you Carol for covering everthing that one kknows senses and can only say in the time that passes  for each from work to temporary work to a mix of choices that are not any one of us but rather a system that we all have outgrown and survive by our rare views of a greater reality that we hope for the future.

TY for pointing out the whole person has to be acknowldeged , not just the now unemployed worker, and not just the body and bills.  Your spiritual reality is a true blessing .
