- Tell positive stories about family events.
Telling stories is a wonderful way to keep the connection going between generations. Make sure the story makes the person feel good and highlights their positive qualities. - To quote the Beatles, “Let It Be.”
The worst thing we can do is show up at our relatives and have “the conversation” that has been simmering for years. Enjoy the family don’t try to reform them, especially during the Holidays. Don’t sabotage the celebration. - Let the kids do it! You deserve a break!
If you go and visit in your children’s home, be a good guest and don’t try and take control of the activities or cooking. Go and relax, it’s their turn to stress out about the turkey! - At dinner, go around the table and tell 3 things that you admire or love about each person.
This is a surefire self-esteem booster. This will raise everyone’s “deserve level” and create good feelings. - Try something new or different.
Let your grandchild teach you a new game. Go play ping-pong with a son-in-law. Go to a movie you wouldn’t normally see. - Listen to your relatives
Ask them about their lives and really pay attention. Support their success and love them through the tough times. Just twenty minutes of real attention and concern can lift their spirits for days. - Don’t over-give and then get angry at how unappreciative everyone is.
Ask for help: assign duties and delegate responsibilities to others. Stop being the caretaker and you won’t end up the victim of the season.
