You’re doing a great job of getting your workouts in at home, when suddenly work takes you to Houston for a week-long conference. Visions of long days spent in endless meetings, eating bagels for breakfast and cookies at lunch fill your brain.
I talked with Julie Coulston, a full time fitness trainer and mother of three small boys, and she shared some tips on how we can stick to our exercise routines even while on the road:
- Choose a gym with a hotel
This is the best way to insure that you get exercise on the road. Call them up to find out what hours they are open, then schedule the exact times you are going to work out, e.g. before or after your meeting, at lunchtime, or just before dinner. - Carry your own portable exercise equipment
If the hotel you are staying at does not have a gym, the easiest fix is to travel with a jump rope and resistance band. Between those two things you can get in your aerobic and muscle building workouts.
- Try nearby walking or hiking trails
If you’re the type who likes to exercise outside, look online to see what some good walking, jogging and biking areas and trails are around your hotel. You can also call the concierge to see what he or she recommends.
- Rent a bike
Believer it or not, there are stores in almost every major city that will deliver a rent-a-bike to your hotel room. One of the things we do is offer a concierge service for our clients, who want to rent equipment when traveling.
- If all else fails, hire a trainer
You can often hire a personal trainer though the hotel to work out with you. Make the appointment before you leave for the trip, so you’re stuck once you get there and have to keep it!

I love number 1, choose a “Gym” with a “Hotel”
