5 tips to get people to read your blog Hot Conversation

How to get people to read your blog:

  1. Get people to read your blog by visiting other blogs on the same topic, commenting on their content, with a link back to your blog.
  2. You want to offer good information and thoughtful comments — which other bloggers like — not just chime in to hawk your blog, which annoys other bloggers.
  3. Cross-promotion is good. If you read something valuable on another blog, create your own blog post commenting on what you read and sending your readers to that blog to read the rest of the content.
  4. Never, never copy and paste someone else’s entry without the creator’s permission — just quote from it, and always credit the blogger with name, blog title, and link.
  5. Then write to that blogger and tell him or her what you did, with a link back to your blog. He/she will likely appreciate the additional traffic you’ve sent, and might reciprocate. Even if not, it’s good karma and good networking.

In other words, give generously first. Others will do the same.

Thanks, this information is great.  I visited your blog, it’s very professional and informative.  I never knew it was so easy to purchase sex toys, or that there was such a large selection…..live and learn.

Is it really possible to make money with a blog?  I live in New York and there seems to be legal/tax issues with affiliate arrangements.  All of the possible affiliates I have approached will not work with New York residents.  Would you know how I can obtain information regarding NY residents and affiliate programs?

You can’t make money from a blog unless you attract advertisers — not just affiliates. My blog is just now attracting advertisers after four years. That’s very nice, but even so, it’s not like I could pay the rent with it.

Blog because you love your readers and your content and want to share and be a resource. Don’t do it for the money, because most likely, there wont’ be any… or maybe enough to buy lunch.

I don’t know about NY restrictions, sorry.

Thanks for the advise. I started my blog about a year ago and I do enjoy creating it and interacting with my readers.   The questions I receive give me an idea of what people are looking for and an opportunity to share my ideas and introduce them to my website.

        Your blog is lovely, Rose!

Hey, everyone, if YOU have a blog, be sure to give a description and link in your VN profile. That’s how I found Rose’s interior decorating blog after reading what she said above. We VN members want to know about our community!

AS I AM 78 AND SEMI-MILDLY-SORT-OF LITERATE ON THE COMPUTER — I REALLY DO NOT UNDERSTAN HOW TO START A BLOG = NOR HAVE I EVER SEEN A CLEAR DEFINITION OF A BLOG.  HELP???

If you’re “mildly-sort-of-literate on the computer,” Maggie, it’s too early in your computer comfort to blog! Instead, post comments here and many people will have the opportunity to learn your views. Blogs, I think, are for people who have a mission to share something. Although it’s easy if you’re used to using the computer and the Internet, it’s not a first step.

Definition of a blog: literally, “blog” is the abbreviation for “web log” — a journal, of sorts, that happens on the web rather than in a notebook.

Maggie if you wish to become more than semi-literate, you have to sit at the screen and learn how things work by trying them.  Example: do you know how to search the web?  If you use the search feature in your web browser, you’ll find that “surfing” the internet brings amazing experiences. Just click links and see where they take you.

Use the “favorites” button to bookmark your favorites. Organize that section of your browser (the Favorites) into files like you did when you had an old fililing cabinet.  If you ever worked in an office, you’ll realize how much the computer is like the office.  Except that you are the executive in charge.  You have to be your own secretary too.  If you use that metaphor to organize your mind…you’ll become more efficient and more knowledgeable, faster .. every day.

To learn more on blogs, go to blogspot.com  and livejournal.com  Find blogs you like, mark them in your favorites under a new folder you create called BLOGS. Visit your favorite blogs daily and follow links in those blogs to other blogs.  Eventually you’ll have a little bundle of blogs, following the lives of women you admire or who make you laugh.

As you study their work and style, you’ll gain confidence to build your own blog. Each of those websites let you make a blog for free, using their easy template to design and post to it. Give yourself six months to become a blog reading expert…then begin your own blog journey.

Learning how to upload photos to a webpage and manipulating photos in general will be a huge help to you.  if you don’t have a digital camera, get one and learn how to use it.. as you’ll need it for your blog. Photos are a must for a lively blog.

Lots of people don’t know how to attach a photo to an email. Learn how.  Learn how to store your photos. I recommend Kodak products for their great website and the ease of using the cameras.

When you post replies to blogs, don’t type in all CAPS because in the internet world, this is considered to be the equivelant of YELLING and I am sure you don’t mean to shout at us.  LOL  (laugh out loud).

      Hugs and hope this helps.

Joan, how do you find blogs with similar topics?

    • JoanPrice JoanPrice says

The same way you would find information on any topic — narrow your topic, and Google it. If you add the word “blog” to your search, you’ll find blogs. For example, if you Google “senior sex blog” you’ll find mine listed more than once.

I’m delighted to see so much interest in blogging. Whether you read them or write them (or both!), blogs are a wonderful way to learn and share.

Also, bloggers love it when you post interesting comments, so I hope you do that. I’m always happy when I see a new comment about something I’ve written. It spreads the knowledge around, and lets us see that people care what we say.

Thanks much for the tips, Joan.  In actuality, I guess I already knew all of them, but it always, always helps to see them again. (^_^)

I post frequently on other people’s blogs but I’ve been a little remiss about adding their links to my blog.  Will have to work on that!

And thanks for starting a new thread.  As much as I love it here on VN, long threads tend to get a bit unwieldy!

Thanks for this great posting on blogging. I have started blogging recently. I am getting rather addicted, and finding I love sharing my thoughts as a nurse on various topics. I have one main theme, however, I target different groups with my health topics. As a nurse, I write one specifically for nurses. As a 51 year old woman, I am writing about finding my best life @ 50, and then I just do my general health coaching blogs. I really appreciated to see your tips here. I never knew how to find other blogs with my same topic. Thanks for that great information. I just joined your page on facebook. I am also on facebook with several pages as well. I look forward to connected with other people, especially women. I am connecting with my desire to have an impact on peoples lives, especially their health.

Excellent advice, Joan. I was on a ship a year ago when Madisen Harper asked the right question. At the time, a friend and i were planning a book about life’s vicissitudes (aren’t they all – books and life – about ups and downs?). Madisen’s digital publishing workshop caught my eye. She asked the roomful of writers and book-publishing hopefuls to ask ourselves what it is we wanted. If it was to publish a best seller, we could slog through the traditional publishing minefield. If we had something we wanted to say, a message we felt was important, we could start sharing it now, via the Web.

Though I’d been blogging as a means of sharing travel adventures with friends and family, I hadn’t thought of blogging beyond that. Shortly after returning home, my writing friend’s life became too complicated for our long-time plan. I remembered Madisen’s question and started Catching Courage.

Friends are sometimes puzzled that I’d willingly spend so much time doing something that offers no monetary gain, but they’re reading the blog, sharing it with friends, sending e-mails that tell me how it’s touching them. And that’s all the payment I need.

Exactly, Cathryn. No one pays me to write my blog, either, but when I get emails like, “you may have saved my marriage,” or “I ordered the Eroscillator and my wife had her first orgasm in six years,” (these were actual emails from strangers!), my eyes tear up and I know my mission is worth doing.

Thanks so much. Though I have an e-zine instead of a blog, Tip #1 has worked well for me over the last six months. The payoff is an increase in submissions to Writer Advice’s Fifth Annual Flash Prose Contest. I love what I’m reading for the contest. Thanks so much for sharing this wise advice. I’d much rather pour my time into responding to other people’s blogs than starting one of my own–maybe because I already have the e-zine. =)

Really good info here. So many blogs too little time. Here are my blog-tips. I find posting in the Notes section on my Facebook Pages to be helpful. If you have a Twitter account post your blog-link there. I even post in my Care2 message forum. Just posting your link on the bottom of every e-mail you send out can have a positive result. We may think everyone we know “knows” we have a blog. But people are busy, they don’t always take the time to check every link coming to them. When they do finally click on they will send it ahead to others if they enjoy it. Happy blogging kidz! Alex Brooks http://alexandrabrooks.wordpress.com

VN, would it be OK if all the members with blogs posted a short description (blurb) and the URL here, or if we created a list just for that? It would be handy to have all these blogs in one place so we can visit and support each other. It could include blog name, creator’s name, URL, and 1-sentence description of what we’ll find there.

One of the best ways I’ve found is to read online newspapers that allow you to comment such as the NY Times and Huffington Post.  Glance over the paper in the morning and find an article or two to comment on.  Doing this also helps you identify trending issues.  I learned this tip from my ‘reverse mentors’ who run a babyboomer blogger bootcamp (see http://www.wordpress.babyboomerbootcamp.com) My blog is http://www.flashnomad.com  Take a ‘trip’ to see it now!
