There is nothing more exhilarating than white water rafting, but like with every other sport, you want to stay safe! I recently spoke with Brian Megaw, a river guide with 23 years experience at River Valley Lodge in New Zealand, who is also the owner of the local tour company. Brian pointed out the main issues regarding white water rafting which are applicable anywhere in the world.
Here are five key questions to ask before contemplating a white water rafting trip, from what you need to bring, to industry standards and what grading means on rapids:
- “What are the standards for rafting in this area?”
In New Zealand and most other countries there is a standard Code of Practice which covers everything from equipment used to audit of operators. It is always advisable to check the credentials of any operator that you are contemplating using.
- “What does a Grade 5 river mean?”
There is an international grading to classify rivers, and while the scale runs from one to six, with six being the most difficult. In New Zealand, for example, only Grade Five runs can be made commercially by tour operators. - “Is my guide suitably qualified?”
While all guides must hold a CPR and first aid certificate, all Grade Five guides also must hold a 4-5 New Zealand Rafting Association qualification. - “What should I bring?”
Brian says he usually recommends that clients bring a swimsuit and sunscreen, as most companies will provide thermals, wetsuits, jackets, booties, helmets and other equipment. Many companies will also provide photos. - “Will I get wet?”
You will definitely get wet whilst whitewater rafting, with the option of jumping out of the boat to cool off and experience swimming a few of the smaller rapids, but there is no guarantee that you will not involuntarily swim whilst on the river.
