4 ways to extend the life of expensive undergarments

  1. Never put underwear in the dryer. Everything should be line-dried.
No undergarments should ever go in the dryer. Panties, bras, everything should be line-dried. The fabrics (Spandex, Lycra) are very heat sensitive. When you put them in the dryer, the heat breaks down the fibers.
  2. Hand-wash your garments in warm water.
If you must machine-wash your garments, at least put them in a garment bag.
  3. Hook your bras before machine washing.
Make sure to hook your bras before machine washing. I think every woman has had the experience where she realizes she stuck a bra in the machine and she pulls it out and she finds a clump of clothes – everything stretched out and ruined. The bra is sort of like a spider in the washing machine.
  4. No need to buy special soaps.
I’m not buying into the specialty soaps. None of them have proven to me that they’re better than everyday laundry detergent. Save your money!

Is the delicate setting on a washing machine as good as hand washing, or not really? I’ve always wondered that.

I love HerRoom.com, by the way!

these are great tips!  here’s one special soap idea you must try…   wink wink…

i recently discovered a neat trick for making washables, bras, undies, linens, etc, seem like brand new!   i had spilled a dollop of salsa on a beautiful new white blouse from Jones New York (i wear for business)… and i washed 7 times with every possible whitener additive which still did not remove the stain!   i called a friend whom gave me the best trick ever!   she said salsa and marinaras, etc, have oil in them, so add a teaspoon of ordinary Dawn dish soap to your laundry cycle and wash away!   works like a charm!  no need for expensive stain removal chemicals!   i added it to the load containing bed sheets, and wow!  super bright and clean!   i apply it to shirt collars, and voila!  super clean, no more ring around the collar!

        a fabric softener laundry trick…

another neat laundry item i’ve learned can save you alot of money…   1/2 cup white vinegar with 10 drops of your favorite pure essential oil added to the rinse cycle…  super fabric softener at a fraction the cost of others!    removes static, is my favorite scent instead of manufactured scents, and a bonus is that there’s no more linty stuff coming off my clothes after being in the dryer!     (other softeners leave stuff on your clothes or break down the fibers so your clothes wear out faster).    the white vinegar actually helps rinse the clothes much better.    for towels and bed linens, i sometimes put more essential oil drops if i want a stronger fragrance.   white vinegar, $1/gallon;  pure lavender essential oil, $17 (will last all year)… my monthly fabric softener cost has gone from $6/bottle/month down to 25 cents/month!

plus, i use that same essential oil in unscented candles and tealites…

I beg to differ, from Jeunique you can get product called Delicat for your bras and anything else that can’t be washed with the regular laundry soap.  You just use a cap full in luke warm water.  I wash my bras with this and they are fine.  When you use regular laundry soap and put your bras in the washing machine it weaken the threads and sometimes the shape, therefore you have to go and buy another bra.  Just a suggestion.

I’ve always washed my bras by hand in the sink. I use baby shampoo and cream rinse, which are gentler to the fabric and also great for wool sweaters.
