6 age-defying makeup tips for women over 50

Susan Posnick was a celebrity makeup artist for more than 20 years. Then, in 1998, she developed skin cancer on her face. The experience led her to develop a her own makeup line focused on purity, health, and simplicity. Today, Susan Posnick Cosmetics offers makeup that works for women of all ages, but is particularly suited to women over 50. Susan shares her top six makeup tips for older women.

  1. Use highlighting color to lift and brighten.
Next to sun protection, a highlighting color can be the most valuable tool in your makeup wardrobe. As we age, gravity makes things fall. Careful use of highlighting color can counter the appearance of this:
    • Brow: Use a little bit of highlighting color just underneath the brow and a little bit above the brow to lift, open, and brighten the eye.
    • Cheeks: Use the same highlighter at the top of your cheekbone to make it more prominent. Again, it's a lift up.
    • Mouth: Use the highlighter around your mouth where those little lines sometimes settle in. Just sort of outline the mouth to make it look a bit fuller. This also softens the lines around the mouth.
  2. Open your eyes.
I think women over 50 should always use some eyeliner. Apply it above the top lashes and don't go too thick; it can be a very thin line and then you can smudge it out a little bit by the eye. Keep the eyelid lighter in color rather than darker in color because it will keep the eye looking open. Choose an eyeliner color that flatters your coloring--something that defines the eye but isn't too hard. Black is good, but sapphire blue can be beautiful, or coppery brown, or a deep purple.

  3. Go easy on the lip liner.
Definite lip liner was popular about 20 years ago. Today, too much lip liner has a dated, aging effect. If you're going to wear a lip liner, wear a very neutral color just to cheat the lip line a little bit.

  4. Enhance your lip color.
You want nice, moist, pretty lips--but with some color. I think glosses are great, but I think once you're over 50, put a little color with that gloss.

  5. Don't be afraid of a little eye shimmer.
Many women over 50 are very afraid of eye shadows that have shimmer in them. 20 years ago, you needed to be afraid because the particles were so big that they made the eyelid look crepe-y. But today, everything is so refined you don't have to be afraid of a little shimmer. This is a big change.

  6. Flatter your neck and jawline.
There are things you can do to flatter these areas which can be a problem for some women. For example, under the chin and onto the neck you can apply a little bit of contouring color (two or three shades deeper than your foundation color) to shadow it back a little bit. Another trick is to apply highlighting color above the jaw line and below the bottom of the cheek, to lift the face.

Finally, learning these tricks is easier when you're shown how to do them. If you go to a department store, approach someone whose look you like and who is age-appropriate. But you may get better attention at a smaller apothecary because in an apothecary they are not selling a specific line--they are selling what works best for you.

I put some face powder on my lips before applying my lipstick.  It helps the lipstick stay on longer!! Irene (ipheuneman@aol.com)

Ive had dark circles under my eyes forever but now that I'm older they seem worse. I use to apply concealer with my finger and then struggle to blend enough so that I don't have that white circle look. Now  I use a "concealer brush" and I'm able to apply just the right amount. I put my foundation on after concealing, blend again and achieve a more natural look (sans white circles).

Cream blush - not too pink.  That matte look is great for my mid-20's daughters, but on me it's sooo aging!

My favorite makeup tip acually isn't mine.  It's one from Elizabeth Taylor I read when still a teenager.  She advocates taking your fingertip and brushing it over your lipstick to use as a matching blush.  That way, your blush always matches and it blends wonderfully.  It's always worked for me.

This must be an old trick passed down to the next generation. Where as I have never done it, I can remember watching my mom do this when I was a child.  She will be 95 years young this coming Decemeber.

I also find a dab/smudge of highlighter between my eyes and the bridge of my nose to have an "opening" younger look.

I always use a damp makeup sponge to apply foundation. It keeps the foundation from being too heavy. Also, I don't use powder, just liquid makeup. Lines are less noticeable.

Or one could learn to love oneself, as is. Otherwise it's a case of increasingly ever-decreasing returns - aging signs get worse and worse.  But accepting oneself is valuable beyond anytihng one can do to hide.

One of my best makeup ideas came to me by accident several. A friend and I were playing with what we thought were some ridiculously bright eye shadows and laughing our heads off. My eyes are green/blue, depending on what I wear and what's around me (trees? green; ocean? blue), so I applied a shimmery turquoise color. When I tissued it off, a narrow line of it remained close to my lashes, and to our surprise, it looked beautiful! Now I apply it intentionally with a small, stiff Chanel eyeliner brush, just at the lash line, both upper and lower. It doesn't read turquoise. It actually kind of disappears. But wow! it makes my eyes look great.

My favorite makeup tips are these:  When I apply my eyeliner to my eyes, I slightly lift my lid just below the brow to allow my pencil to touch just the extreme upper lid line.  It gives me a much smaller line across my eye.  I like just a small line of eyeliner not a large one.

One of my final touches, after my foundation is on and I am applying my light colored bronzer on my cheeks, I also brush under my jawline from ear to ear.  Then put a small amount of a light color to my chin right above the bronze line to bring forward the chin a little bit.  It works great to hide my hanous jawls. Sometimes I use a light powdered beige/shinny eye shawdow on my chin.

Be happy with yourself, the way God made you. God doesn't make mistakes.  See someone without a smile?  Give them one of yours......you both feel better!  I love to add a little color by adding some blush to my face. It gives me a fresh glow.

I am extremely happy with myself. I just know that at my age, there is always room for a little improvement.

Use only cool steam-distilled water when cleansing the face.

I've found that as I'm aging that going with less intense color helps me look younger - no bright eye shadow, no bright red lipstick. I stick with earthy colors over the eyes and light colors with no frost on the lips helps draw the attention to the eyes and not the color over the eyes. I also use my eyelash curler more often now as my lashes have thinned out and I always shape my brow and use a little brow color to draw the eyes up and away from where gravity has taken my skin!

I received a free tube of your lipstick and have worn it nearly every day since it arrived. And I've NEVER been a woman to wear lipstick. The color is just right, it doesn't dry out my lips, and gives me a fresh, natural, "finished" look - without looking made up. I only wish it was available in stores in Louisville, KY>

I also received the lipstick and LOVE IT!  I love the color, smoothness, stays on for a long while and the magnatic case...what a brillant idea!  I don't have to worry about the top coming off in my purse and little bits of lint attaching to my new lipstick. Susan, you have wonderful ideas. Keep up the great work.

Not for everybody, but  if you want healthy, shiny hair, narutral hair use henna instead of color, There are many shades in Rainbow reserach line, Does not cover grays that well, and you cannot put a perm on. I am 49, have long dark brown hair, people stop me in the srteet and ask what do I do with it, it glitters! Cat every 6 weeks and apply henna. Give it a try.

I've used henna for 4 years to cover gray. When I tired of auburn/red, I added indigo to the routine (for espresso brown/black color). I don't recommend prepackaged "hennas" such as Rainbow or other health food store brands, however; instead I urge anyone interested in henna to buy the pure herb. The results are much better for your hair, longer-lasting. Hennaforhair.com is the source I use; instructions for curing henna and dying with it can be found there. My favorite hennas are Jamila from Pakistan and the henna from Yemen. Deep, deep color.
