Until I read Carol Orsborn’s post this morning (“Oscar’s Lib: the grown-up women arrive“), I did not realize that Kathryn Bigelow, the director who scooped up two Oscars for The Hurt Locker, is 58 years old.
Look at her! Wow. That does it. I’m now more determined than ever: I’m sticking to my weight management plan.
I don’t want to look any older than I have to look. I want all that energy! I want that sparkle! I don’t need an Oscar, but I wouldn’t mind being able to wear a fabulous gown without looking like Flora, Fauna or Merryweather.
Congratulations to Kathryn on her success. And congratulations to all of us who see inspiration in her success — we’re on our way now. We were just distracted for a moment, right?

Huh…I always thought a little extra fat on the face puffed out all those wrinkles!
Maybe a little, but not as much as I have these days
The gaunt look is in..
I’ll settle for not chubby! ;-)
I hear ya
Just for the record from your pic I think you look great 8-}
thanks so much, but I’m afraid the clever camera angle acts as a successful disguise
I’ll second that…I eat great, small healthy meals/portions etc. but the weight doesn’t go away. Excerise is the answer…Ugh, so hard to do.
I would love to lose weight, but with school, work, and a husband who loves junk food, it’s difficult. I always start out everyday real good, but by evening when I’m coming home between 6-8 pm I just start eating and eat till bedtime. Guess it’s something I really have to focus on. Not eating after 8pm. I know this intellectually, but it’s almost once I hit the house, all I want to do is eat dinner, and snack till bedtime. I know it would be easier to not have snack food in the house, but my husband isn’t on board and he does our shopping. So yeah, working on the mental disapline still. We are all works in progress.
If possible I would suggest you eat the most nutritious dinner possible. Plenty of vegetables, (one half to two thirds of your plate) good quality carbohydrates, such as brown rice or quinoa and a good lean source of protein, such as chicken. By doing that your body will be very satisfied and you will be less inclined to feel the need to snack at night. Try it and see, good luck!
SeaWriter…..she has great genes (and jeans)…..I have the worst genes for hips and thighs…great genes for complexion and hair (and freckles)….she was married to James Cameron….she has MONEY….money sometimes can buy beauty….but she probably would look that way if she ate cookies for breakfast, ice cream for lunch and chocolate for supper….
Oh, dang, there’s a realist amongst us!
You’re absolutely — and oh so depressingly — right about genes and jeans. There’s nothing to be done about those. But we can still strive to be our best selves, right?
Absolutely, those that strive to be their best will definitely succeed and she certainly has. She is doing what she loves, she is happy and fulfilled, great recipe for weight maintenance. Genes usually account for about 20% of the reason for weight gain although some do have a higher metabolism than others but an active lifestyle and healthy eating increases metabolism.
When you follow a healthy diet and lose weight slowly you will definitely look younger!
i agree. At this stage of my life to maintain weight loss i have to eat very little. Even w/1200 cals a day i gain weight. But when i was a lot thinner i looked younger and everybody told me. need to lose 20 lbs., that would be great, but even 10 will be fabulous. I do not like animal products. I will eat it maybe once a week. I love carbs. My downfall.
I love the carbs too, so have a rule: no carbs after 5p.m.. at least I have a chance to burn them during the day. Also try to drink lots of water and clear (herbal) tea
i lost 70 pounds and now my skin hangs, my face has 3x as many wrinkles. But I do have more energy, no more high blood pressure and I look good in my clothes. wish my skin would snap back…oh well!!
Found this interesting My daughter is overweight and she heard to put the scale in the kitchen by the frig Everytime she went to snack (as we women do) she would either grab something healthy or say she thinks she had enough when looking at the scale. She told me she had it in the kitchen now for 2 weeks and lost 6 lbs. I just moved my scale to the kitchen
HA! What a great idea!
What an interesting idea. I will have to try this. It definitely won’t hurt. Here goes moving the scale into the kitchen beside the fridge.
My luck, I’ll trip over the scale in the dark, break a hip & they’ll have to put me to sleep
Food for thought 8-}
I thought the same thing about her. What I envied was her jaw line! She does look great.
Losing weight is so important if you have arthritis aches and pains, too. When your body shape starts to morph and get rounder, there will be added pressure on ankle, knee and hip joints. Your body will thank you for the improvement. Don’t look at the scales, just tone up what you have already. In time, you will notice that your clothes have gotten looser and that means you have toned up and lost fat. And isn’t that an added benefit?
I’m working on a story about this issue.
My weight control comes in the form of carresses from my hubby. Sometimes I know that he’s…you know…horny, and then sometimes he’s doing what I call “The Fat Check”.
He rubs his hand down my back, over that little section of back fat, until he get’s to my butt, which of course I tighten during this approach. But…when it slides beyond the curve of my cheek and discovers that second little cheek, you know the one, I know he’s trying to see if I’ve been working out.
We’ve always tried to encourage each other to stay in shape, to eat right, and to maintain our looks at least until we’re in our 70′s. At that point we’ve agreed that all bets are off. LOL
Love this post and the conversations it has provoked. Wondering how much our heads get in the way of our fitting into slim jeans. I recently went off my Hormone Replacement Therapy and noticed that the weight I had accumulated around the holidays was being seemingly much more resistant to my exercise and eating routine. I immediately made the connection that because I’m over 50 and off of hormones, the weight was going to be impossible to release. I have been seeing a wonderful spiritual healer who gave me the “Deservability Prayer” one of the lines of the prayer says: “I no longer identify with limitations of any kind” One day as I read that, I realized that my being over 50 excuse was a limitation I was no longer willing to identify with. I can’t tell you how quickly my body began to release the unwanted lumps and bulges.
