What Vitamins do you take and why? Do you think that certain brands are more “absorbable” than others? I am trying to determine what supplements I need, which ones work, and how many are really necessary.

The best I found is GNLD products-GNLD’s Scientific Advisory Board members are recognized around the world for their leading-edge research. I would suggest you speak to your dr. or even better a naturopath to determine what you really need, the brand and the dosage. Best thing I ever did.

As a pharmacist I get that question all the time and it seems like it should have a straight forward simple answer but it doesn’t. When deciding about the right supplements some things to consider would be your overall health, how well you eat, how good you are at swallowing pills(don’t laugh many people have a hard time) and how compliant you think you are. I also prefer capsules over tablets as the ingredients in capsules are not usully as tightly packed as tablets and therefore tend to breakdown better. This is a general rule and there are always exceptions.
A good broad spectrum vitamin tends to have a lot of “stuff” in it and manufacturers try to get as much in each dose as possible to reduce the number of pills needed to get the required dose. Many mulitivitamins require 3 to 6 capsules or tablets taken throughout the day to get all the ingredients - so you do need to keep that in mind when choosing.
In my opinion a good multivitamin is probably one of the most important tools in the healthy tool box- particularly as we get older and our immune systems dont function as well as when we were younger.
I used to take all kinds of vitamins and actually looking back they never seemed to make a diference but it was the only thing that I knew to do to make sure I was getting all the nutrients I needed. Then I started reading all kinds of things about the overseeing of the industry and started taking a closer look at them all. Some do nothing because they go right through us, others do not have in them what they say they have, others have things in them that they shouldn’t. How do you know what to do? The answer I found was not through the supplement avenue but rather whole food based nutrition. I take Juice Plus to bridge that gap.8 veggies, 7 fruit, 2 grains, also 9 different berries and I get them every day! The thing that really impressed me though was that there is real 3rd party published clinical research. I know what I take is good for me. I know that if I eat that every day it is going to make a difference in my heath.
