Stubborn Midriff Fat and the Paleo Diet Most Liked

During the past year I got real sick, like preparing my funeral sick.  Miraculously I’m well now.  I am joyful, energetic, and fat and terribly out of shape. While doing research for something else I came across the Paleo Diet:  High Protein, fat, veggies in combination with 8 hours sleep, gentle walks, and lifting heavy things.

After two weeks I feel great!!!

Does anyone have any experience with it?

Never heard of it. I do some of these things already. I lift weights, have for years. I sleep more than eight hours usually. I eat pretty much what I want within reason. I’m not into deprivation. That sends me right to the fridge. I never did goofy diets so my metabolism isn’t horrible like some our age. It’s slowed down, but not like those who have abused their bodies trying the next greatest diet. I had a physical yesterday and am up a few pounds. So I’m cutting back on my night time eating and amping up my workout a bit. I used to weigh myself daily, now only at doctor’s office. When i did it every day I found it set the tone of the day…usually negative. I do much better ths way. Everyone has an individual formula what works for them. The key is to experiment and find it. It’s taken me 58 years, but I do ok.

    Granny,

I have heard of the Paleo diet.  I am actually on this diet.  Not 100% but it has made a big change in my life and how I feel.  I also Crossfit which is where I learned about this diet.  My only downfall is still breads.  I have lost 10 lbs in 4 months on this diet.  It is almost like a gluten free diet.  Good luck!

It is actually more of a lifestyle than a diet.  As a newly minted breast cancer survivor, I have been maintaining a paleo lifestyle for the past 3 months about 80% of the time.  I have lost 20 pounds, and I feel like a million bucks!  I got started by reading the book Wheat Belly.  So groundbreaking!  Good luck to everyone.

I’ve been “paleo” for nearly 2 years and while weight loss certainly occurs (40 lbs for me), the health benefits are why I continue.  No gluten, minimal dairy, no processed foods, no  sugar all have had an anti-inflammatory effect and translate into no joint pain, little rosacea, and better sleep and energy.

I have been eating Paleo for the last 2 years and I’m like some raving zealot telling people about it!  It really is the secret to staying healthy and young. Although I have always been slim, my health has improved in every way – especially my IBS.  I eat dairy, too (though I don’t drink milk).  My mother, who’s 89, has been eating this way for a year and apart from losing the 20lbs she’s complained about since I was a kid (I’m 55), all her health issues have gone, getting her off her medications.  My kids are on it, (13 and 23) and are slim and healthy (and no mood swings for my young daughter from starches and sugars).  I tell them how lucky they are to know how to stay healthy when they are so young.  I advise anyone to try it for a month and see how you feel.  When you have a few recipes to replace breads (eg. we have a super scone recipe made with almond flour and eggs), it’s not difficult to do (and you can still eat chocolate!)
A great book that goes into the ‘why’ this works, is one I just read called The Paleo Answer.  It’s basically that most seeds (grains) contain anti-nutrients (that stop your body absorbing nutrients from other foods) and compounds that are resilient and do not break down in stomach acid that cause ‘leaky gut syndrome’, whereby food and food waste permeates the stomach wall and gets into the bloodstream.  This causes inflammation and a host of serious diseases, as well as severely disrupting your immune system.  These compounds are nature’s way of protecting the seed from being eaten or the plant would be unable to propagate (and quickly be extinct).  Ancient man would not have eaten these seeds (especially grass seeds like wheat) as they would have provided minimal energy (calories) and digestion would be very poor. These defensive compounds are not not found in the leaf of a plant (eat your greens!) or in nuts that have a hard shell (think of a brazil nut) because that is their natural defense.
Anyway, rather than go into it all here, I’m in the process of writing an email for friends and family who keep asking me ‘what exactly do you eat?’.  So if anyone would like a copy of this email, let me know by emailing me at janeandpeter@shaw.ca and I’m happy to share (when I’ve finished it!).
