Splitting fingernails – what can I do? Most Liked Hot Conversation

My fingernails have a very bad habit of splitting horizontally way below the point that I can clip or file them. Any ideas on how I can prevent this would be greatly appreciated.

The best thing ever Naititique #2. I’ve used it for 15 years. You won’t believe it. Put a coat on every night before you go to bed. Dries in a minute. Take it all off once a week. In about a month you won’t believe it. Get the big bottle. it’s $16.00 in LA. Can’t find it let me know. Cynthia Turner Hirsh

I also am a huge fan of the Nailtiques oil.Use it every night before you go to bed and you will see remarkable results. I was introduced to it 20 years ago when I had my fake nails taken off and my natural nails were like tissue paper. Within 4 months I had my natural nails back better then ever,

I too have such bad splitting nails, mine are so bad that I bought the glue on ones which looked good for a few days, then when they came off UUGGG, terrible. I would like to try Naititique#2. I live in MA, do you have any idea who might sell it here or where I could find it on the web??

I had been having the same splitting nail problem and they were very sore.  I talked to a pharmacist who told me to get “hair and nail” vitamins, even though I was taking a multivitamin.  After a month I noticed the splitting has quit.  Good luck.

Sounds like you may need some healthy fats in your diet.  Flax oil is wonderful for your hair, skin, and nails.  I take about a tablespoon every morning.

Two things;  Dabu Nail Hardener, a coat each day for two weeks.  Use as a base coat and a top coat when your nails get in better shape.  Awesome stuff.  Take a good Omega 3-6-9, such as Natrol.  The fish oil, borage oil, and flaxseed oil do wonders for hair, skin and nails.  Wish you well because I have been there.

I have been writing down all of the suggestions.  Thank you all so very much and if there are any more ideas, I would surely appreciate them, as would other women with the same problem.

One thing you might want to consider is researching the products before you use them. Some can be harmful. Maybe try this site for starters: http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/product/51811/nailtiques_Formula_2_Plus_%282006_formulation%29/?prod_id=51811

The only thing that ever helped me was a product called “Nail Envy” by OPI.  Choose the formula for splitting nails and follow the directions that come with it.

I have the exact same problem and have had it for years and years (I guess all my life).  If you learn anything that helps, please let me know.  Thanks!

i have also had this problem for years…done the nail envy, done the nailtiques 2, and when i tried vitamin d…i had bad reactions to it. so investigating supplements is good advice.  take note of any aches and pains that start up when you take supplements, it could be reactions to them.  i take extra calcium, have a diet with plenty of protein…i think the flax and wheat germ oils sound good. i’ll try those now. thanks all

I’m another one who has to recommend Nailtiques 2.  I did quite a bit of research on the web looking for something that would stop my nails from splitting.  I’ve never had long nails, they are much too weak.  But the reviews of Nailtiques 2 (the 2 is important) were really good, so I decided to give it a try.  That was a month ago.  I now have pretty nails, probably the longest they’ve ever been.  And in another month, WOW!  I can’t wait.  Another great thing about this product is you don’t have to use remover to get it off.  After about a week, it easily peels right off.  You can also put nail color between coats.  I highly recommend it!

I began taking 5mg Biotin a day + 2 RegeneMax (by Xymogen) a day to try and revive my thinning fine hair. It worked pretty good but what really looks great is my nails!  Wow, they look the best they’ve ever been after a lifetime of thin peeling nails.  And, yes, for topical help on nails Nailtiques is very good.

Forgot to mention: try Cutemol on nails and cuticles for extreme dryness and cracking, especially in the winter.

I was taking a joint supplement with MSM. My fingernails had never been so healthy. They grew so long that I had to trim them. I read that MSM has sulfur and is good for nails.

I noticed when I used Nailtiques it only worked for a while and then my nails went back to splitting.  I did try Nailtique #2 as well.

The absolute best nail strengthener I have found is called Nail Fitness.  My nails responded in about 3 weeks, becoming stronger and no splitting.

    You can find it online.

Have you tried gelatin tablets?  I have wimpy nails that split and tear off if I don’t take gelatin in some form every day.

gelatin is a placebo, can’t possibly work.  Nails are made of keratin.

Actually, gelatin does work.  This is something I know about.  There are many things that work, that the medical community does not yet acknowledge.
