I have had to take high doses of prednisone over the past 4 years. I was finally able to wean off, this past july. Prednisone is like a double edged sword, if you can use it short term, too relieve swelling etc. It’s like a miracle. Over 20mg, for a period of time will produce side effects, I have found. Like Moon face, mood swings, increased appetite  etc. That’s not a reason to not take it though. Eating properly, exercise, and realizing the side effects can be worked on after you’re finished with your treatment.

Thanks for sharing, Dillin. You must be estactic not having to take it anymore. I hope you continue to do well. I’m not sure yet whether I’ll have to go this route, but it’s a possibility. (The drs. are still trying to dx my problem). And, I’m scared to death of prednisone! My mother was put on cortisone in ’69 for crippling rheumatoid artheritis. Her condition improved in the short term, but then it seemed it stopped working. Or, maybe they had to cut it back because of side effects. (I was just a kid so don’t know the particulars. She passed away in 1980). Anyway, she never could get off of it entirely. I nursed her as best I could through the awful side effects. (Her skin was paper thin and bruised easily. The slightest pressure would tear it, and, it was always getting infected. I’d have to soak the scabs off and clean the wounds with peroxide. They seemed to take forever to heal. Even though she must have been on a relatively small dose, she had to take it the rest of her life. (Eleven years). So, yes, she had the moon face and the hump on her back. I remember the RA seemed to come on quite suddenly. I feel like my problem has, too. And, it seems that genetics is playing it’s part. Now I can’t stop dwelling on how quickly her quality of life changed and how it affected all of us, too. :(

Hopefully, you wouldn’t have to be on it long term. Keep in touch, good luck!

Predinsone is a miracle drug with nasty side effects. I have been on it for over six months, going from 10mg a day to 50mgs a day. The Dr.s are trying to get the right mix. In the mean time I have a hump on my neck, a pumpkin face and snap at the drop of a hat. I am also on immune suppressent drugs that make me feel exhausted all of the time. The good news is that my disease is finally getting under control. What I have learned thru all of this is that it takes time to heal. Lots and lots of time.

Glad to hear that the prednisone is getting your condition under control, Rachel, but sorry you have to take so much of it! Hopefully, you’ll stabilize and be able to wean it down again. As for me, I saw a neurologist. It doesn’t sound like I’m going to need to take prednisone, but still not sure what I have though he’s pretty sure it’s late life migraines. (They don’t really present like a migraine at all. More like a TIA/stroke). So more testing to do. sigh.
