Hey Patty ;-)  Happy New Year!  my gyno recommends black kohosh….Me?  I take “Women’s Wellness” vitamins by Andrew Lessman (sold on HSN exclusively).  These vitamins have gotten me thru and I really don’t get them too bad now….Good luck!….K

I see a gifted naturopathic physician who put me on something called AM/PM Menopause Formula because I was having hot flashes and night sweats, and I haven’t had one since. It’s an herbal formulation with no hormones. It might be worth it for you to give it a try, too. I swear by it. The company that makes this is called Enzymatic Therapy. You can find it online without a prescription. Be sure you get the Menopause Formula and not the Peri-menopause Formula. Good luck!

Hi! I have these also. I hardly ever get anything during the day. Definitely perimenopausal since my period is still regular. I tried to take an herbal formula recommended by my sister. However, it made me feel awful so I stopped. I had already been having the symptoms for 2 years anyway, and I have tried over that time to figure out the triggers. This has helped a lot. A HUGE trigger, for me anyway, is wine. If I drink a glass of wine, usually red wine but also happens with white, that evening, I can count on having a night sweat that night. So I just have to be prepared, and sometimes I have beer or vodka instead. These do not trigger the night sweats! I only really have a drink on the week-ends, so that is when I have the night sweats. Also, I find that my cycle changes things. I tend to get them more when I am premenstrual. So when I take the vitamins that I take for my PMS (such as a multi with iron, and my calcium) I seem to have fewer of the night sweats. Good luck. The Bee.

I had these over 2 years ago, then nothing…now they’re back with a vengence. Night sweats that wake me throughout the night and now horrible flashes throughout the day-It’s embarrassing. And I’ve been steadily gaining weight around the middle over the last year. Nothing fits. Diets and exercise are a nightmare as I’m so tired and irritable from no sleep…I really feel alone with this-like it’s my cross to bear and I don’t have anyone that’s going through it. I’m embarrassed to discuss it at work with men among us…I really hate this and there’s no clear answers to my questions…I get responses like, “it could last 2 yrs or 10 yrs”-try Black cohash, don’t drink wine or be stressed….

I’m trying to find out what works for me but it’s really an uphill battle. Every day I start over again only because I have no choice. I can’t focus…the doctor was of no help…I got unclear responses and was offeered an antidepressant medication that was supposed to help nightsweats, but I’ve never been a prescription person and I especially don’t want that type of medicine.

Ok…i’m done bitching but I had to get that out.

I guess the answer is to find out what works…I know that I could handle it better without this excess weight, so I’m starting there. I sleep in a cool room (my hsband is under a ton of blankets and I don’t have any) …I step outside with the flashes at work (it’s winter but i barely feel it-it just dries me off) and back into work I go…good luck in your journey….let me know what you find-from everything I’ve read and heard, everyone is different and not everything works for everybody…For me, stress does seem to bring it out.

I wish that I had someone with my own DNA that I could talk to about it…my mom had a hysterectomy after her last child, so she’s out…nobody else…as things do tend to be the same in family’s, that’s really the best option if it’s available to you…Good luck…I certainly can relate though….

      Hi Breathedeep…

I have had hot flashes for about twenty years. For the first ten, I was miserable and no one could help me. I wore light clothing, carried a hand fan, everywhere! I slept with a fan blowing on me at night and light or no covers.

As the years passed, they got lighter and lighter. I am in my mid- sixties and no more sweats. Thank God! So, I wish I had better news. We are all different and yours could stop much sooner. I hope so! I had embarrassing moments, but would say “hot flashes” and pull out my fan. Lol. Most people understand. :)

My older sister never had one hot flash…not one! Geesh!

      Good luck to you!!

Hi Evie…how come I never really heard about any of this before it happened. I’d hear general reference but only encountered one person who had hot flashes and looking back, now realize how much she suffered. But I don’t think that there are any words that can describe how horrible it can be.

I took my temperature during a hot flash to see how hot I was and I was 3 degrees over normal-in a matter of 10 seconds. Can’t we combust:).

I am thankful that it is winter. I have walked into the garage naked (nobody home) after a shower (my kitchen goes into in through a door) and I barely noticed that it was 23 degrees…that’s pretty bad…

I guess that my sense of humor and the winter months will get me through. I haave 15 pounds to lose and plan on dressing in next to nothing all summer…Guess my sweater days are over ( I used to be a “sweater-girl).

Peppermint Patty: I will work on finding out solutions on this one or , at least, more innovative ideas for living among the comfortable people again…

        Ongoing…

I know, I had never heard about the severity of hot flashes…maybe I wasn’t paying attention. I had my first one while at the theater and sitting in the middle of a long row of people. I thought I was going to die. I worked my way out through the dark, went to the restroom,  and splashed my face with cold water…there went the make up! I had no idea what was happening! It was like someone had lit a fire under me!

I went to my doctor and she was of no help. I visited health food stores and bought a variety of suggested remedies…nothing helped.

One thing I want to mention,  that just occurred to me, an endocrinologist might be able to help. Very late in my hot flash experiences, I read that some women were having success with these doctors. I think it is rather involved, lots of testing, etc. and could be expensive, but it’s worth a try. I haven’t Googled this, but that’s worth a try, too.

Also, losing weight will help, too. I have hypothyroidism (same as Opra!) and losing weight is just about impossible. I have 30#’s that will not leave me even if I starve myself! Getting older is the *pits*, but I will trudge on! ;)

I do hear your frustration and angst!  ”Comfortable people” Ha ha!

Oh, I was a “sweater girl” myself and gave them all away! Whew!
