Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine using volatile plant materials, known as essential oils, and other aromatic compounds to alter your mind, mood, brain function or general health. Aromatherapy is credited with pain and anxiety reduction, enhancing of energy and short-term memory, relaxation, hair loss prevention, and even reduction of eczema-induced itching. So, can aromatherapy help stop hot flashes and hormonal night sweats associated with menopause? Some say, “Yes!”
There are two basic theories about why aromatherapy works. One is the influence of aroma on the brain, especially the limbic system through the olfactory system. The other is the direct pharmacological effects of the essential oils. The book offers the following recipe for a hot flash remedy and instructs you to mix the ingredients well and dab or spray on your wrists, face, or neck when you want to stop hot flashes coming on.
10 drops lemon oil
5 drops pepperment oil
2 drops clary sage oil
1 ounce aloe vera gel
Alternately, you can use the oils in a bath or mix with massage oils for a foot rub or full body massage.
For a relaxing bath to help relieve and hot flashes and hormonal night sweats, Pure Scents for Well Being recommends blending the following essential oils with one teaspoon of oil or milk and adding the blend to your bath:
4 drops geranium
2 drops lemon
1 drop peppermint
