horses

Is anyone on this site involved with horses in any way?  I am 65 and still ride about 3 or 4 days a week.

I have a middle-school age daughter who is passionate about horses! I don’t know where it came from because no one in our family has any experience with horses. I’ve never been on a horse, and at at age 60, I admit I’m a bit hesitant to start now. But if my daughter has anything to say about it, she & I will be on a trail ride in the coming year. Any advice?

If you can find a trail  riding place with good quiet horses and you are in reasonable shape I would give it a try.  Pekoe

Nope, nope , nope….no trail riding until you learn to ride and handle the unexpected without panic.  Learn in a ring first to steer, stick to the saddle, stop the horse, turn, basically stay on the horse.  I have the world’s quietest trail horses and trust me there is NO SUCH THING AS A BOMB PROOF HORSE.  My dead dead quiet trail mare had a total spasz attack out of the blue and I had to get her quieted down enough to jump off!  The other two are also dead quiet and they can suddenly spook or gallop to catch up if they fall behind.  The trails are never ever safe for a beginner.  STAY HOME AND LEARN TO RIDE.  I have taught riding and I firlmy believe in learning basics.  AND FOR GOD’S SAKE WEAR THE PROPER HEAD GEAR.  This makes me freaking crazy!  Someone in my neck of th woods just got killed being bucked off a trail horse with nothing on his head.  He never regained consciousness.  Protect your head of don’t ride.    I live in Chicago and ride out here, but will be going to Palm Springs shortly and ride out at a friend’s farm.  No indoor rings out in the desert.

I’m your girl.  Have been riding and showing hunters for 32 years.  I’m just 60 and ride four times a week although at the moment my most recent horse is out in a field recovering hopefully from an injury.  He is 20 and may not recover but I still ride/jump.  I’m a horse junkie as they say and have made many many fabulous friends over the years with whom I’m still in communication.  As you may note I just had an accident on my post “How I got the black eye or happy birthday blues”, but i’m getting better and will be riding next week again.  Thank goodness it was mostly cosmetic and the black is fading.  I hope to ride forever and jump and show again.  I consider myself very knowledgeable on the subject so I’m here for you!  Go girl go!  Talk to me.

Nice to hear from you.  My first name is Gail also.  I was riding yesterday but freezing rain in not my friend so stayed home to day to avoid it.  I have the use of an arena for the winter and take the occasional dressage lesson but trail riding is my passion.  Where do you live?

Beware, once a horsewoman always a horsewoman.  There is nothing more addictive, more expensive, more therapeutic, more empowering or more rewarding.  I have been a horse junkie for 50 years.  I will ride until the day I die.  I will chose to spend time with my horses over my boyfriend(s) 99% of the time and my romantic interests know this, understand this and accept this as a fact of my life.  I put my daughter in a saddle at the age of four and she is still riding at 15.  The horses have kept her away from unhealthy peer pressure, boys, underage drinking, drugs and other activities that are impossible to incorporate into the horse world.  In my opinion there is nothing healthier than moving a 1,200 lb. horse around, grooming and tacking the horse and working in conjunction with the horse to establish trust and respect.  If you have an opportunity to get involved in a community of horse lovers, please do it!  The women are strong, focused and compassionate.

Please let us know whether or not this turns a hobby or an addiction.  I am not going to speak for anyone else, however, for my daughter and me, it’s pure adrenaline addiction.   Good luck!  Happy trails!

Hi Raly:  Most of the time it is an addiction but I must say that living in Ontario the winters are not my favorite.  I have an arena so just need to plan to ride with a friend to keep me going.
