I am working on giving up sugar and am interested to know if anybody has suggestions for treats that don’t require artificial sweeteners. I use stevia to sweeten yogurt.

      I too have had this ongoing battle with sugar and its substitutes.  I do use a combination of Molasses and honey for muffins and some cookies.  I have also found many healthy sugar substitues from a few  cookbooks, “I Can’t  Believe This Has No Sugar” Deborah E. Buhr and “Fruit Sweet and Sugar Free” by Janice Feuer.  The sweeteners are a littly costly, though.

    You can buy some powder protein drinks sweetened with stevia. I buy chocolate ice cream flavor and just having a large glass of this satisfies the need for sweet.

      Many times drinking a large frozen sweet like this gives more enjoyment and the protein helps with your blood sugar.

    After awhile you may find that sweetened treats don’t taste good anymore.  For snacks now i eat other things:  avocado with a splash of lemon, walnuts, almonds, dried figs, toasted pecans, banana with a nut butter on it, sweet potato zapped in the microwave with olive oil, broth, sauerkraut, clementines. The sugared things taste yucky to me with one exception… Really dark chocolate..the 85% kind..!

      Now I”ve been put on a low carb diet, so can’t even eat most of these things anymore…no dried fruit, bananas or sweet potato.. I miss it, but am working on finding replacements. So far here’s what I’ve come up with:  marinated artichoke hearts, nut butter on celery, cheese, 1/4 of a grapefruit, smoked salmon ( once in awhile: it’s salty), chicken, celery and mayo ground up in the food processory. If anyone can think of any other tasty but really low carb snack ideas, please share~ I’m looking for real food rather than food products, though.

        Slice a zucchini and top with Parmesan cheese.  Place under broiler until the cheese turns brown.  It’s a good snack.

      I’m with you love dark chocolate and with peanut butter. Yummy and oh yeah some cherries. Hubby thinks I’m crazy LOL. A little piece is suffice for me.

    I just started using Truvia to sweeten everything.  I just gave up sugar for the umpteenth time and I had a week of withdrawal headaches.  It’s so funny that after you shake it, you really don’t have the need for it.  Someone offered me some m & ms and they tasted too sweet to me; I declined having any more.  And for me, that is something, because I have the biggest sweet tooth in North America!  I am eating 3 square meals a day but no snacks except maybe fruit (I know fruit has sugar but I think it’s better than eating the big Cadbury bar!)

      check into truvia…not so sure about it….marketing is spectacular….I’d stick wtih stevia…but it’s not something I like for baking.

      The fruit thing is a great idea…see the suggstion below for banana with nut butter……sounds fab to me!

      Gee, I thought my sweet tooth was the biggest in North America.  I had to give up sugar and artificial sweeteners before my cravings went away.  I no longer have those low blood sugar drops like I used to get when I was hungry.  In fact, I seldom feel starving any more. I too eat a lot of fruit but try to stick with the high fiber fruits like apples and limit grapes, etc. 

      On special occasions, I will eat a few bites of a dessert but I honestly don’t want the entire thing.  On those occasions, I will eat something sweetened with sugar, honey, or maple syrup.  I stay away from corn syrup and artificial sweeteners all together.

        I agree!  I had to give it all up to stop the cravings.  I went ‘cold turkey’ in October and managed to get through Christmas with minimal tasting.  You’re right – now a couple of bites are enough.  As I didn’t like artifical sweeteners before, I didn’t see any reason to substitute them.

        I feel extremely sleepy and sometimes light headed after eating super sweet foods like desserts and chocolate. I even get very tired and sleepy after eating all three meals and I doze off at work nearly everyday. (I can get away with it, I’m a caregiver/companion). I only get about 5 hours of broken sleep a night, my body won’t let me sleep through the night. I get up at 5 AM anyway.

        Since i have mild IBS I can’t use artificial sweeteners. I have sweet tea with a heaping tsp of sugar  2 times a day- morning and lunch time. I am of largely German heritage.. so I have a sweet and fat craving tooth! :  )

      try cutting back on coffee,  if you drink it.  it can be part of the problem too. caffeine raises your blood glucose and can contribute to the vicious cycle. i eat those sugar free candies, chocolates from russell stover.  delicious and satisfying when you have a craving.  In moderation only.  stay away from artificial sweeteners as im sure you know, they can be dangerous for your health. No pop either, including sugarfree.  too much high fructose corn syrup…. which by the way is in almost everything you eat, even bread. read the labels. You’re right when you say that once you stopeating it, you don’t need it. i find i crave chocolate around my period.  challenging time for me.

      I see that Truvia comes from stevia, and it may be delicious, although I find stevia doesn’t appeal to me that much (although I really enjoy chewing the leaves from the stevia plant) The sugar substitute which works best for me is “Just Like Sugar” which I believe is derived from chicory. It is very good, but, as mentioned above, is a bit pricey

      I used to use honey to sweeten my Tea. Stopped doing that for a while and found that my Tea taste better plain.  I used to love eating sweet things but suffer from bad headaches so I stopped and have a little fruit. I found that fruit like blueberries, cherries, pear and pineapple sometimes apples make me satisfied. If I bake something and need to add sugar I use less than what is on the Recipe. Family doesn’t notice the difference and I can enjoy my dessert.

    A chocoloholic addicted also to desserts, I made it simpler for myself by making a New Year resolution: No choclate, no desserts in 2010. This way I do not negotiate with myself when I have a bad day and feel I ‘deserve” a treat or when I am under the influence of a single glass of wine that breaks my resolve….

    So far, we’er 3 weeks into the year and it’s working.

      I tried no chocolate for a while. But I try a little piece at a time to see how I feel. I don’t need much. So when I want to celebrate bring out the Dark Chocolate please.

        Also dark choclate has antioxidants. Who knew it was good for you. Sometime I go the candy store they make homemade chocolate. Some are with sugar and some are sugar free. I get the sugar free with almonds bark. Yummy.

        I cannot have just “a little piece.” Once I take a bite, I am a goner. A doctor explained that my insulin leel shoots up with one bite and then the craving is physical, chemically induced…. So I can look at chocolate and chocolate-products and hold off (with effort), but no first bite any more than a recovered alcoholic can take that “only one” glass of alcohol.

    Try Blue Agave syrup.  You can buy it at a health food store, and Trader Joe’s also stocks it.  It’s low glycemic index, is totally natural and you only need a little.

    I went cold turkey on sugar in coffee a few years ago.  It was a shock at first, but by the end of a month, I didn’t want the sugar, it tasted nasty.

    Whatever you do, don’t buy stuff with artificial sweeteners, since they cause you to want more and more and more sweet stuff.  Stick with fruit.  For a treat, buy very dark chocolate. I found that one square is enough to satisfy.  It isn’t that sweet and doesn’t cause me to crave more.

    I lost 40 pounds last year using a low carb diet.  It was hard at first to give up the bread and especially the one thing I love, Pasta.  The surprise to me was that after a couple of weeks I just don’t miss the suger, the flour and the carbs…There are now so many very good and healthy receipes on line for low carb meals that it has become fun to find new favorites.  If you have a sugar emergency,the Atkins candy bars are very good for a sweet fix if you need it and have as low as one gram of sugar. There are also ice cream bars.  That can be a lifesaver in your weak moments. I am on track to lose 20 more pounds this year and eating healthy.  I also exercise by walking every day at least a mile. The combination of all of these methods makes me feel really good! Almost as good as my pants getting looser and putting another hole in my belt.

      Wow, you are a real inspiration fiddlerdi…….it all comes back to practicing good self-care, doesn’t it? Eating a balanced diet, getting away from processed foods and sugar, drinking lots of water, sleeping well and exercising. It’s a tried and ture formula that will always work. It takes more time than the “quick fix” programs however, once you develop good habits, you feel really good and want to maintain the good habits. Everyone here has offered fantastic tips and I’m going to be watching Dr. Lustig’s presentation with my husband! Thanks and let’s keep this convo going….there is so much to learn, seriously!!!!!!

    I gave up sugar through the program Radiant Recovery. I haven’t had any for more than three years, and don’t have any cravings – astonishing!And it’s a lot easier than just going cold turkey – nono of the withdrawerl headaches someone else mentions.

    They do have recipes for some desserts and such, with fruit, but I don’t use artificial sweeteners or stevia, as that just continues the cravings.

    The best thing is that my irritability and mood swings just went away completely!

      I tried this but they headaches were very bad. I love the potatoe idea though.  I do that sometimes still after 4 years.  But a little bit helps me. I can’t give it all up.  Not me a very big chocoholic.

        I did Radiant Recovery.  I still suffered from horrible headaches.  I enjoyed the potato.  Headaches aren’t only from sugar craving for me but also cycle.  I have found that I have to be careful what I eat. Many sensitivities not only sugar.

        Well, it avoids the sugar withdrawal ones… Hormonal headaches are another story! (I get those, too) The program really helped my migrianes at first, when most were caused by blood sugar spike and drops, but I’m getting them with menopause, now, and that’s different. I’d have even more if I was still getting the blood sugar ones, as well as hormonal issues.

        And a lot of us find that, once we have all the other nutritional support in place, and we’re not doing sugar, it’s easier to identify other sensitivities. I even had one (dairy)  clear up – though you can’t count on that…

        The thing is, it’s a whole program., Bits and pieces don’t work – you need the synergy. And I started feeling better in Step One! and it just kept improving.

        And – and this is the biggest – I really, truly don’t crave sugar. I’m not sitting there bravely resisting – I’m just not interested. I never thought I’d see the day…

    I was using “Splenda”. I use honey now for my sweetner when I make oatmeal with no salt or sugar.  I don’t even buy sugar anymore.

    I watch that presentation of Dr Lustig. It is blind blowing. I have always known that sugar is no good for anyone.

    I couldn’t believe that sugar is also in baby formula, that blew my mind and that WIC provides this for women and there babies. Unbelievable.

    I would suggest not using any sugar substitutes since they are also not healthy for you. Instead of sugar use honey or pure maple syrup which at least have other benefits to your health. If you can’t use those products either, just cut out sweeteners altogether on food or in drinks. I know there are recipes for cakes etc. that use sugarless applesauce for sweetening. I have a great one for carrot cake.I also know of a person who used to soak raisins in water and use that liquid for sweetening. Much better to go with the natural sweetness in fruits. Another good treat is frozen bananas or baked apples with raisins and nuts inside.

    I gave up all sugar from all sources at the same time I gave up all gluten grains.  Cold turkey.  I’ve never liked artificial sweetners and think they’re poison.  Now, I’m astounded at the natural sweetness in milk, plain yogurt and fruit.  My tastesbuds had been dulled by sugar overload before.  I don’t even want any of that sugared  stuff now.  This after many years of addiction as well as blood sugar issues.

    This is a huge battle!  I’ve given sugar up from time to time (and lost weight every time I did!), but am currently back on the Evil!  :  )

    I personally still like saccharin, given that even I don’t drink the 600 sodas a day they gave to the lab rats back in the 70′s! Ha!  They have also cleared saccharine of the evil reports, but no one bothers to advertise that. Too many of the soda companies jumped on the aspartame band wagon – they don’t want to change it all again I suppose. However, I can’t have aspartame, and neither can my husband.  It makes my tongue and mouth swell up in an allergic reaction. My husband gets migraine headaches from it, so most of the diet sodas and such are out for our house. (I can drink only 1/2 can of a diet pepsi before I have a fat tongue and numb lips!)

    What I’ve been using, and so far really like are the Stevia products.  They have the regular sugar packets for teas or cereal, etc, and some really wonderful flavored drops. They come in a host of flavors, from lemon, orange and such to vanilla or English toffee. They are great in hot or cold drinks, so tea and coffee flavorings with a little sweetness are easy.  They also are good for making flavored water – just a few drops (maybe 7-9) and a regular 16-oz water bottle is nicely flavored.  I get ours from VitaCost, the best price I’ve found on them, and they have a great variety. I like lemon, lime, orange or mango in the water! :  )

    If you are a lemon fan, there is also a nice product called TruLemon that really tastes like a fresh lemon when added to tea or water (or recipes). You can also get it in lime and orange flavors, but I have not tried those yet.

    Someone else had said that sugar substitues are not good for you.  That is not true as a blanket statement. There are many that won’t harm you at all, such as saccharine and stevia. Aspartame is NOT a good thing at all, and should be avoided. While it has been approved as a sugar substitute, that doesn’t mean it is good or useful, and it isn’t.  You need to know what the subs are made from, and what type of process it goes through. Some have such a chemical process added, you might as well just stay with natural sugar. Just don’t rule them out completely – they are not all bad.  Seriously though, stevia is the forerunner on decent sugar substitutes that do not cause other reactions in our bodies.

    My hubby is currently taking culinary classes. As I helped him study last semester for his nutrition section, I was amazed at what we both learned about sugars, how they break down in the body, and what they turn into when we eat them.  I’ve always thought honey was a great natural sweetener, for example.  Well, it is more natural than aspartame, but that is where it stops!  Honey is no different nutritionally (not taste – just body nutrition) than table sugar! Yep – it is true. It is technically sweeter than sugar. Sugar is normally made from either sugar beets or sugar cane and is 99.95% sucrose. Honey, by contrast, is made of THREE saccharides – sucrose, glucose and fructose!  Surprising to most of us, I bet! So, it won’t do you any more harm than regular ol’ sugar, but it also gives you no added benefits either. We’ve all been sold a pretty good bill of ads on how natural and great honey is, but it really comes down to personal preference. I was shocked!

    Another big shocker?  There are NO current gov’t/federal regulations on using the word “Natural” on food labels.  So, mfgs can put that word on anything they want to without breaking laws.  You can be buying “all natural” almost anything, without really knowing what you are getting. Gotta read the labels very very carefully!  So, you could buy a package of cookies that are “all natural” and “made with natural honey” that would be worse for you (not to mention a lot more expensive) that just a plain ol’ package of cookies.

    Anyway, from the studies from his nutrition class and from my own research online and experimentation, I prefer stevia over all the other non-sugar sweeteners.  Another HUGE plus on its behalf is that it does not affect blood glucose. That is uber important for anyone that is borderline diabetic or already diabetic or hypoglycemic. In other words, it won’t affect your blood sugar either way.  I’m hypoglycemic myself, and there are some foods that hit me like a mack truck, and others that I have no effects from – we all really have to listen to our body’s reaction to foods when we eat them, and learn how things affect our personal digestion and metabolism. 

    It might even be that you don’t need to give up sugar entirely, but to cut out certain forms of it that are setting up cravings in your system.  I know that I did feel better when I cut it out entirely, but the cold turkey was such a bad idea! I felt horrible for about two weeks.  I was off sugar and refined flours for about six months, but eventually slid back into some old habits. 

    PS – be sure to read the YOGURT labels!  OMG – I was shocked at how some of them are so full of sugar/glucose, I might as well have a dish of ice cream!  Stick with as plain as you can bear, and flavor them with jellies or jams, or stevia drops.

      I felt fabulous after a week of giving up sugar entirely. I have been sugar free for a while now and have never felt more energy and clarity in thought. I really did the whole enchilada after watching Dr. Lustig’s video. I work in nursing homes and in home care and see the devastating effects of long term sugar abuse. It doesn’t take much to destroy your health and since I have reached my upper 50′s I realize how important staying healthy is. We eat to live, when our taste buds run our life our taste buds ruin our lives.

        I agree.  I actually had the pleasure of hearing Dr Lustig’s presentation in person at a childhood obesity conference in California this past June.  My personal belief is rather than searching for alternatives to sugar, we should train our taste buds to want the more savory tastes not sweet.  Perhaps the additives could be the first step in the weaning process.

        As Dr. Lustig mentioned, we should be eating our foods as close to fresh out of the ground as possible.  In Michael Pollan’s book, In Defense of Food, he simply states, Eat food (whole fresh, not processed). Not too much (portion control). Mostly plants. I highly recommend this book, it was life changing for me.

        Wow, you were very lucky to hear him in person. I would love to meet him. I agree, as close to nature as possible, and it is very possible to retrain your taste buds to work for you and not against you!  It is all about fresh whole foods, not processed and when you are eating greens and other healthy vegetables portion control is not as necessary. No sugar, no bad fats, no starches, your good!

    i LOVE sugar and carbs.  I hate meat, and animal products.  Will eat it occasionally but hate to cut it up and cook it.  So my best bet would be a diet of brown rice, stir fry vegetables, brown pasta, rice and beans etc.   I have realized that after i eat carbs it triggers the sugar cravings.  If you eat mostly protein or flesh items the sweet cravings subside.  However, i also feel deep in my soul, that eating animals at all times is not good for your body.  First and foremost these animals are tense and frightened and i, for some reason, feel that all that adds up to not being a good thing, creating illness to your body, to me that makes a lot of sense.  So what is a woman that wants to lose 20 lbs. do?  I exercise more than the norm and yet i am still overweight.

      yes, I agree with you. I don’t eat much animal meat anymore. sometimes chicken. but I gave up most of it a while back. giving up sugar is a new development. I eat fresh fruit and sprouted genesis bread with almond butter for lunch alot, whole avacado with salt and pepper is another favorite. Dinner is rice and beans and green leafy vegies. my fiance has lost  weight that he has been trying to lose for years and I feel really energetic and alive on this diet. I work with so many people who have so many metabolic diseases that they are completely disabled. I know it is the result of sugar over abuse. I have stopped eating any substance that is sugar or fruit juice sweetened. I still have one cup of coffee in the morning with milk. The sugar substitutes are hard on the liver. It is really about liver cleansing. once the liver is fat free the rest of it melts away easier.

      then there is all those superfoods like algae, seaweeds, etc. google “raw food diet” then “cave man diet” and see what all they are saying. I agree the meat thing is overrated, I will only eat ‘kindly killed’ organic meat when I do eat meat, not that often.

      My blood sugar soars when I eat pasta, rice and beans, etc..  Even though I only ate the whole grain, healthy kind. So even though I continue to eat lots of low carb vegetables, I have had to add in more meat and fish. ( Dairy products trigger headahces ). I avoid industrial, feed lot meat and chicken. I have found a local farmer who raises animals in a humane, pasteured, sustainable, organic way .I have visited the farm. I don’t think the animals are tense and frightened.  I feel good about this choice.. and it’s good for my health.   All my lab numbers have improved.

    I just re-read your question, and at first had thought you were just asking about sugar substitutes! :  )

    Anyway, one thing I like is cheese. The string cheese sticks are really wonderful as a snack – the protein keeps you feeling balanced, and it really stomps on the hungries.  In the summertime, frozen fruit is a good snack too.  I used to freeze green grapes. It was a favorite treat! Then I realized how high in sugars those little boogers were, and that they were giving me big blood sugar swings (that’s me – I am hypoglycemic). 

    One of my favorite recipe sites is allrecipes.com. You can search by the type of recipe, or by ingredients (which is nice if you have some odds and ends in the fridge!).  There are many low-fat recipes in there as well. 
    A hard boiled egg is a nice snack if you like eggs.  Even with the little salt you might want to put on them (or Mrs. Dash – yummy!), they are still better for you than sugary snacks.  Another thing that I kept around often (and am currently out of) are Stouffers animal crackers (you can get them by the bag at WalMart or other grocery stores).  These little guys have very little sugar and the calories are not outrageous.  I can have a handful and feel like I treated myself to something without really going overboard on anything.

      thanks musicamom…love the mozzarella string cheese…..good trick…and the egg idea is good too. I like the idea of the animal crackers…not the buying food at Walmart idea though…..and not sure about whether or not they would have saturated fat. See what happens when we start to pay attention to our food……one bit of consciousness grows and before you know it, we’re all thinking about a kinder diet….kinder to our bodies and to our planet. Did aybody see Oprah’s show earlier this week? I haven’t seen Food Inc. yet and frankly am a little afraid of what I’ll see however I will….but not before I watch the sugar video.

    I am giving up not only sugar but especially corn syrup.  I never really was able to drink it in sodas (gave me d…)  Yesterday, I listened to Dr. Robert Lustig and I now just have to quit!  Here is the website:

        Thanks for the advice.  Since my post, I also have been reading:  “Good carbs Bad Carbs” by Gary Taubes.  Very eyeopening regarding the “diet” research that has gone on for over 60 years.  We all have been ill advised!!!!

        Thank you for mentioning that book. The more I learn, the more I understand why and how our culture battles the bulge. We are seduced by sugar and corn syrup and other cheap ingredients that are not in our best interest. It is challenging to stay away from the white death (as my mother used to call it)….I encourage all of us to examine how much sugar and corn syrup is in the food we eat…check bottled spaghetti sauce…bon appetit!

        It is truly amazing what our culture has done with sugar and how destructive it is to every body part. Most people only fear diabetes. they have no clue that sugar contributes to all inflammatory conditions, cardio vascular events and conditions, and emotional conditions. It is truly the white death, your mother was so right, and so in tune, and ahead of her time!

    Try Xylitol if you can get it. My nutritionist recommended it to me – it is the only natural alternative and has no reported side effects, in fact it has a range of good effects! Believe me, don’t try the other – chemically produced ones.  It can be used in cakes and biscuits etc, if you feel the need sometimes for a treat 

    Xylitol can be a bit pricey and hard to get – but yesterday (finally) I got kilos of it in Beanfreaks – and also some sachets which I can carry around in my handbag. It is a life-saver!

    Hi there.  I hear ya, I’ve been looking for candy bars or some kind of candy sweetened with Stevia or other sweet treats sweetened with Stevia and can’t find much.  I also stay away from nutrasweet or splenda, etc.  Fortunately I did fid the best bars made by nutrilite, sweetened with Stevia. They are low fat and low carb and have no artificial colors, flavors, no preservative and no hydrogenated oils and they still taste great. 

    You can find them at http://www.double.mychoices.biz.&nbsp; They’re found under weight management or by doing a search for protein bars.  They come in chocolate and cinnamon bun flavor, which is my favorite (if you close your eyes while you’re eating it I swear it taste just like you’re eating a sinful Cinnabon).  Hope that helps.
