Just wanted to see if any of you experienced ear pain… to be more specific. Around a month ago I felt a sharp pain intermittently in my left ear. It gradually got worse and more frequent. My doctor recommended for me first to see my dentist, which I did. His diag. was TMJ so I was fitted with a night guard, use of heat packs and advil. The pain continued, went to the Doctor, and he agreed on the TMJ diag. Put me on stronger meds… but with out the meds I can tell I still have the pain. Is it me but do DR’s just assume the obvious without even thinking it could be something else. I plan myself to make an appointment with an ENT later this month if it continues. It just amazes me in this day and age the we almost have to beg the medical system for help and to get accurate answers. Anyone have any ideas on this?

At this point in my life, if something isn’t fixed by the GP in very short order I get myself right to a specialist….if it continues I probably would not let it go a month….I love how our bodies always tell us when something is wrong..and pain says something is wrong….I have found being proactive (which sometime equates to pushy) for myself and loved ones in the medical community must be the norm…..or we slip through the cracks…..I would go to the ENT, but not wait so long.
I agree with Sunblossom. If you’ve already had this for more than a month and you’re still having it (simply camouflaged with pain pills), then you’re not being treated for whatever your medical problem is. Definitely make that appointment with a good ENT and find out what’s really going on, Georgiegirl. There’s no way I’d wait even one day longer.
Thank you too Duffy M..that is so why I love this site. We all have each other to vent to and ask for advice and opinions. Yes I do plan on seeing an ENT. Will keep you posted.
Thanks so much Sunblossom.. I do plan on searching out an ENT soon. I so agree that one has to be proactive with a lot of things anymore. Thanks for your thoughts and advice, I realize I am not alone on these situations.
A warm hair dryer, blowing gently in my ear, did wonders for my ear problem. I think moisture gets into the ears and creates an irritation. Years ago, people actually blew smoke (from cigars) into their ears, that’s where I got the idea!
Also, Google ‘pain in the ear’ I promise you will get great home remedies. BTW I went to a specialist and $350.00 later, I was still in pain. So, THAT didn’t help!
Evie, I am going to try it.. what the heck, maybe it might help. I did google ear pain and so many things come up from ear disease to minor things. I have been using warm compresses and they do ease the pain but it is just temporary. Thanks for your help!!
An ear *infection* is a whole ‘new ballgame’! My ear problem was due to irritation from moisture, possibly my headphones. I didn’t have an infection and although I was in pain, it wasn’t severe.
Severe ear pain should be taken very seriously! I had an acquaintance die in her early thirties from not attending to severe ear pain. She tried some ‘new age’ kind of thing, along with prayer, meditation, etc. she was only thirty two and left two small children behind! Penicillin would have remedied her problem and she would have seen her children grow up! She had even gone to Disney World with her children a week before she died. The infection moved deep into her inner ear and ended up deadly. So sad!
Just use caution and don’t let things go too far.
Insist on a thorough oral examination. Not to frighten you, but ear pain can be a symptom of throat cancer.
Be well.
