I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that is the only way you’re going to do it….get the willpower to do so. I think you have to reach a point where you absolutely had had it, where the weight loss means more than eating the foods you know are bad for you.
We’ve all been there, and for most of us, its a constant struggle.
In August, I weighed the most I’d ever weighed in my life, even when I was pregnant. It took the shock of seeing that number on the scale to give me the wake up call I needed.
I pretty much cut out sugar and bad fats, and wine from my diet and lost eighteen pounds in two months. Now during the Christmas season I can’t say that I’m sticking to my plan 100 percent because life is short and I like to enjoy the holiday season. I’m probably a couple of extra pounds heavier than I was before Thanksgiving…but once the new year hits, you’d better believe I’m getting my butt back on track!
My goal is to drop another twenty pounds by the time summer rolls around.
You should talk to your doctor about a healthy plan that would work best for you. And remember, you don’t want to drop the weight too fast….about a pound a week.
Hi Ernie
Tamara is right you do need willpower but think of it in a different light – adding to Tamara’s response.
First off attitude is everything. You need to want to lose the weight not just NEED to lose weight. Get rid of the word “diet” from your vocabulary and start thinking of a lifestyle change. As corny as this sounds it is true. Diet has the word “die” in it. When we diet we deprive ourselves and the minute someone tells us we “can’t” we want it right away!!! Any diet works but if you don’t change your lifestyle as soon as you “stop” dieting you will gain the weight back.
Losing weight is about making changes to your habits. Replace unhealthy habits with healthy habits. It is about changing how you think. A huge part of losing weight is not what we need to do but how we think about what we have to do.
I think Weight Watchers has one of the best programs around. It is about making changes in your life; it is about group support; it is about developing a new attitude and learning to live a heathly lifestyle with healthy habits and it is probably one of the most reasonably priced weight management plans. Make sure you find yourself a good group leader – so important – they aren’t all the same. A good leader will help motivate you to find the willpower that you need to lose weight.
I have struggled with weight my whole life – lost and gained 100′s of lbs – did just about every “diet” there was. In 1998 I joined Weight Watchers and lost 40 lbs that I have more or less kept off since then. I have gained back 10 lbs twice but managed to lose it again. Seem to be struggling at the moment now that I am 50 but as someone who has been a weight watcher leader for the last 10 years – I still believe it is about calories going in versus calories going out. You do have to want it for sure. Losing weight or keeping weight off needs to matter to you – how bad do you want this? How important is it to you to lose weight?
When we get older we have to do things differently – you can do it if you really want it!
You have no control over how much weight you lose but you do have control over the choices that you make – with what you do and what you put or don’t put in your mouth!
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t you are right.
I think you will receive many responses to your conversation – it is something many of us know about and I know there is a lot of success with women 50+ because I see it in my members.
Make a list of 10 reasons why YOU want to lose weight – find the motivation you need to start on your journey to your healthy lifestyle!
Excellent points! You’re really not going to do somethin unless you truly want it to happen!
Ernie, Finding exercise you enjoy and eating a higher fiber healthy diet while substituting fruit for sweets worked for me. The holidays are a difficult time to trim weight. Best of luck to you and happy holidays. Kathleen
Hi Ernie, I’ve been thinking about you and wondered how this would fit. “I need to reduce my weight 25 pounds and haven’t developed my will power yet.” The brain is very literal. Unconsciously, our minds think we need to find what we lose setting the stage for yo yo weight reduction. Adding a yet to the end of a statement gives our mind permission to consider additional options.
