When Monika asked about building upper body strength at midlife, VN member tree recommended CrossFit:
At the age of 54, I am back at a gym. I actually take CrossFit classes. You work with your own body weight but also free weights. Weights do not bulk you up – they make you strong.
When I joined the box (that is what CrossFit calls there gym), I did not think I could do pushups, chin ups etc., but I can. I am amazed at what I have accomplished. I can do pullups on my own, bench press 95 lbs, squat 141 lbs. It has not bulked me up – it has made me stronger.
Check into a CrossFit box in your area….you might be surprised!

started crossfit 3 yrs ago..changed my life completely..it is touted as physically empowering and the added bonus is that the mental empowerment is beyond words.. It took me a year to do a pull up w/o a band and now I can do 120 pullups in one workout! Crossfit has changed so many lives in such positive ways..just go in there and try it!
